The festive fortnight, day by day

Twelve dates, four of them bank holidays. Only one of them closes the shops. The table below is the estate-wide picture; the search at the top of the page turns it into your own shop’s hours.

Christmas Day: closed everywhere, by law

Friday 25 December 2026 is the one day of the year when the answer is identical for all 1,426 Betfred shops. Under the Gambling Act 2005 a betting premises licence does not authorise the premises to be open to the public on Christmas Day, so every shop in England, Wales and Scotland stays shut for the whole day. There is no late opening, no morning trade, and no exception for branches inside shopping centres, on retail parks or at holiday resorts.

That single closure shapes the two days either side of it. Christmas Eve becomes the cut-off for anything that needs a counter, which is why shops get busy in the afternoon of the 24th and why the early close catches people out. Boxing Day becomes the release valve, with a strong racing card and queues that would otherwise have been spread over two days.

The rule restricts premises, not betting. The Betfred website and app take bets through Christmas Day as normal, and any free bets or offers that expire over the holiday still run to their own clock. What waits until the 26th is cash staking, paper slips, in-shop machines and cashing a winning slip over the counter.

Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve: the early closes

Neither 24 nor 31 December is a bank holiday, and both are ordinary trading days on paper. In practice they are the two dates where the published weekly hours are least reliable, because the close moves rather than the opening. A shop that normally runs until 21:00 or 22:00 will commonly shut in the late afternoon or early evening on Christmas Eve, once the last race has been run and the staff need to get home, and on New Year’s Eve the doors usually close well before midnight.

Because the early close is a local decision rather than an estate-wide policy, this page does not invent a time for it. What the search results show instead is the opening time, which is reliable, and a clear flag that the close will be earlier than the shop’s normal pattern. If your bet depends on being there at 18:00 on Christmas Eve, that is the one call worth making in advance.

Boxing Day and the substitute Monday

Boxing Day is not a day off in a betting shop. The King George VI Chase at Kempton is the centrepiece, with Wetherby, Wincanton and Down Royal filling the rest of the afternoon, and it is consistently one of the heaviest turnover days of the year. In 2026 Boxing Day falls on a Saturday, which makes the answer unusually simple: expect each shop’s normal Saturday hours, including the earlier Saturday opening that many branches run.

The complication comes on Monday 28 December. Because Boxing Day landed on a Saturday, the bank holiday itself moves to the Monday, and that substitute day is the quiet one. Racing is thinner, the shops are emptier, and a Sunday-style pattern — a later start, an earlier finish — is the most likely shape of the day. Sunday 27 December, sitting between them, is just an ordinary Sunday.

New Year, and Scotland’s extra day

New Year’s Day 2027 is a Friday and a bank holiday, and shops open for it. The reliable detail is that they open late: a branch whose Friday pattern starts at 08:30 may not lift the shutters until 10:00 or later, so the Sunday pattern shown in the search results is the better guide to the day. There is racing at Cheltenham and Musselburgh to bet into once the doors are open.

Scotland then keeps going. The 2 January holiday is part of the Scottish calendar, and in 2027 it falls on a Saturday, which pushes the bank holiday to Monday 4 January. That gives Scottish shops two soft days rather than one: the 2nd, when many open late, and the 4th, which is the quietest trading day of the whole Scottish festive run. English and Welsh shops treat both as ordinary days, and the search on this page applies the right calendar to each shop based on the country it sits in.

Shopping centre branches

A shop inside a shopping centre cannot open when the centre is shut, and centre hours over Christmas rarely match high-street hours. Betfred has branches inside Merry Hill at Brierley Hill, the Metrocentre side of Gateshead, Templars Square in Cowley, Middleton Grange in Hartlepool, Crystal Peaks in Sheffield, the Spindles in Oldham, The Galleries in Washington and dozens of smaller precincts. On the 24th, the 27th and the substitute Monday, the centre’s timetable is the one that decides the answer.

Search results flag these branches as being in a shopping centre. For those, check the centre’s festive hours as well as the shop’s, because the centre is the binding constraint.

How these times are worked out

Three different kinds of statement appear on this page, and they are not equally certain.

Fixed by law. The Christmas Day closure. It applies to every shop, and the results say Closed all day with no hedging.

The shop’s own hours. Boxing Day, the two Sundays, and the ordinary weekdays between the holidays. On those dates the shop’s standard pattern for that day of the week is what you should expect, and that is what the results show.

An expectation, clearly labelled. The substitute Monday, New Year’s Day, Scotland’s two new-year dates, and the two eves. Here the results show the pattern most of the estate follows — Sunday hours, a later start, or an early close — alongside the shop’s normal hours for that day, so you can see both figures and judge for yourself. None of it is a Betfred announcement, and a single branch can always differ.

Every shop name in the results links to that shop’s own page, which carries the full seven-day week, its festive and bank holiday tables, a live open or closed panel and a link to its Google listing for cross-checking. If the journey matters, ring the shop.

Frequently asked questions

Is Betfred open on Christmas Day 2026?

No. Every Betfred shop in England, Wales and Scotland is closed all day on Friday 25 December 2026. A betting premises licence does not permit the premises to open on Christmas Day under the Gambling Act 2005, so this applies to all 1,426 shops without exception, including those inside shopping centres. The Betfred website and app carry on taking bets.

What time does Betfred close on Christmas Eve?

Christmas Eve 2026 is a Thursday and is not a bank holiday, so shops open at their usual time. The close is the part that changes: an early finish in the late afternoon or early evening is normal, rather than the usual 21:00 or 22:00. If you want a bet on the 24th, treat the afternoon as your window and ring ahead if you are travelling.

Is Betfred open on Boxing Day?

Yes, and it is one of the busiest days of the betting year. The King George VI Chase at Kempton leads the card, with Wetherby, Wincanton and Down Royal alongside it. Boxing Day 2026 falls on a Saturday, so most shops keep their normal Saturday hours rather than a bank holiday pattern.

Why is there a bank holiday on Monday 28 December 2026?

Because Boxing Day falls on a Saturday that year. When Christmas Day or Boxing Day lands at the weekend, the bank holiday moves to the next working day, so Monday 28 December is the substitute. It is the quietest of the festive trading days and the one where Sunday-style hours are most likely.

What are Betfred’s New Year’s Day opening times?

Shops open on Friday 1 January 2027, with racing at Cheltenham and Musselburgh, but later than usual. A branch that normally opens at 08:30 may not open until 10:00 or later. The search on this page shows each shop’s Sunday pattern as the likely shape of New Year’s Day.

Do Scottish Betfred shops have different Christmas hours?

The Christmas Day closure and Boxing Day trading are the same across Great Britain. New Year is where Scotland differs: 2 January is a Scottish holiday, and because it falls on a Saturday in 2027 the bank holiday moves to Monday 4 January. Scottish shops are the ones most likely to open late on those two days, while English and Welsh shops trade normally.

How do I check my nearest shop’s Christmas times?

Type any UK postcode, town, city or village into the search box at the top of this page, or tap Use my current location. You will get the twelve closest shops ranked by distance, what to expect on whichever festive date you have selected, and a grid comparing all of them across Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, the substitute Monday, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Are these Christmas times confirmed by Betfred?

The Christmas Day closure is a legal certainty. Everything else on this page is the pattern a shop is expected to follow, worked out from its own standard weekly hours, and Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve early closing times in particular vary from shop to shop. We publish the reasoning rather than inventing a time, and every shop page links to its Google listing so you can cross-check.

Can I still bet online when the shops are shut?

Yes. The Christmas Day rule restricts premises rather than betting itself, so the Betfred website and app stay open through the 25th. What you cannot do is stake cash, hand over a paper slip, play an in-shop machine or cash a winning slip until shops reopen on Boxing Day.

Do shopping centre branches keep the same festive hours?

Usually not. A shop inside a centre such as Merry Hill, the Metrocentre, Templars Square or the Middleton Grange can only trade when the centre is open, so its festive hours follow the centre’s timetable. Those branches are flagged in the search results, and the centre’s own Christmas hours are the ones to check.
