Betfred Easter Opening Times

Easter is four consecutive days with four different rules: a bank holiday that changes nothing, a Saturday that is not a holiday at all, a Sunday that is not one either, and a Monday that is a holiday in England and Wales but not in Scotland. Search any postcode, town, city or village for your nearest shops, then see the whole weekend day by day — including how much trading each shop actually offers across the four days.

Four days, four different rules

Easter is the only holiday period where two of the four days are not bank holidays at all, and where the two that are behave in opposite ways. It catches people out every year.

Easter 2027 at Betfred, 26 to 29 March
DateWhat it isBank holiday? What to expect
26 March 2027FridayGood FridayYes, all of Great BritainOrdinary Friday hours. A bank holiday, but betting shops have traded on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005.
27 March 2027SaturdayEaster SaturdayNoOrdinary Saturday hours. Not a bank holiday at all, and usually the earliest start of the week.
28 March 2027SundayEaster SundayNoOrdinary Sunday hours. Not a bank holiday anywhere in the UK, so the normal Sunday pattern applies.
29 March 2027MondayEaster MondayYes, England and Wales onlyEngland and Wales: Sunday-style hours likely. Scotland: an ordinary Monday. The only day of the four that changes the hours.

The short version: the first three days are ordinary trading days on their normal weekday, Saturday and Sunday patterns. Only Easter Monday genuinely changes the hours, and only in England and Wales. Everything else people assume about Easter — that Good Friday is closed, that Easter Sunday is a holiday — is out of date or simply wrong.

Good Friday: the ban that used to exist

The belief that betting shops close on Good Friday is not imaginary. It was true for decades: alongside Christmas Day, Good Friday was a day when licensed betting offices could not open at all. That restriction went with the Gambling Act 2005, and shops have been free to trade on Good Friday ever since it came into force.

British racing took longer to follow. There was no Good Friday fixture in this country until 2014, when Lingfield and Musselburgh staged the first cards on the day. Before that, a Good Friday in a betting shop meant foreign racing and football coupons rather than a domestic meeting.

So today Good Friday is an ordinary Friday: 294 of the 295 verified shops open by 09:00, and the closing times are the usual weekday spread from 20:00 to 22:00. If you remember shuttered shops on Good Friday, you are remembering something real — it just has not been the case for a long time.

Easter Sunday, and the clocks

Easter Sunday is not a bank holiday anywhere in the United Kingdom. It never has been. Shops trade their ordinary Sunday hours, which already means a later start than the rest of the week: 194 of the verified shops are open by 09:00 on a Sunday against 294 on a Friday, and 65 do not open until 10:00.

There is a quirk worth knowing about for 2027. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, which is also the last Sunday in March — the night British Summer Time begins. The clocks go forward at 01:00, so the night before Easter Sunday is an hour shorter, and a shop opening at 09:00 is opening an hour earlier in real terms than it did the previous morning. Nothing about the shop’s stated hours changes, but if you are setting an alarm for the first race, set it by the new time.

One genuine Easter Sunday rule does exist, and it is not about betting shops. Large retail shops in England and Wales must close on Easter Sunday under the Sunday Trading Act. Betting premises are not covered by it, which is why the bookmaker is open when the big supermarket next door is shut.

Easter Monday and the Scottish exception

Easter Monday is the one day of the four that actually changes the hours, and it changes them in England and Wales only. Scotland does not observe Easter Monday as a bank holiday, so a Glasgow or Dundee shop trades an ordinary Monday while a Manchester or Cardiff one is likely to run Sunday-style hours.

Across the verified estate, moving from a weekday pattern to a Sunday one costs an average of 1h 49m of trading, almost all of it at the start of the day. That is the single biggest difference in the Easter weekend, and it is why the results on this page read the country each shop sits in rather than applying one rule to everything. Search a Scottish postcode and pick Easter Monday: the shops will tell you plainly that nothing changes for them.

How much trading you actually get

Add the four days together and the Easter weekend gives an average of 48h 40m of trading per shop, against 50h 07m for the same four days in an ordinary week. The loss, about 1h 26m, is entirely down to Easter Monday.

The spread between shops is much wider than that average suggests. The longest Easter weekends in the verified estate run to 56 hours across the four days, in the London shops that open 08:00 to 22:00 seven days a week. The shortest are barely two thirds of that.

When you search, the results include a four-day summary for your own area — how many shops open by 09:00 on each day, the earliest opening, the latest close and the average length of the day — plus a four-day total on every individual shop. That is the quickest way to answer the real Easter question, which is not "are they open" but "which day and which shop".

Racing over Easter

Easter is one of the better racing weekends of the spring. Good Friday now carries an all-weather card, Easter Saturday is a full Saturday programme, and Easter Monday is traditionally busy with jumps and Flat fixtures across the country, including the Scottish Grand National meeting at Ayr in some years. The Flat season is just getting going, so there is a mix of codes.

That makes Easter Monday the awkward combination: one of the busier racing days of the month, and the day when most English and Welsh shops are running their shortest hours of the weekend. If you want a full afternoon on the Monday, check the closing time rather than the opening one.

As on every other page here, we have no evidence that shops extend their hours for a big Easter card. Published hours are flat across the year, so assume the listed times and use the Google listing link on each row if a late bet matters.

Easter 2028

Easter moves, and in 2028 it moves late: Good Friday falls on 14 April, Easter Sunday on 16 April and Easter Monday on 17 April. That is nearly three weeks later than 2027, and well after the clocks change on 26 March, so the British Summer Time quirk does not apply that year.

The rules are otherwise identical: Good Friday an ordinary trading day, the Saturday and Sunday not bank holidays at all, and Easter Monday a holiday in England and Wales but not Scotland. All three 2028 dates are in the selector, so you can plan a year ahead.

How confident each time is

Three different kinds of statement appear here.

Certain. The dates, and which of them are bank holidays in which nation. Easter Sunday is not a bank holiday anywhere; Easter Monday is not one in Scotland; Good Friday has been a legal trading day for betting shops since the Gambling Act 2005.

The shop’s own hours. Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday, where the results show each branch’s published Friday, Saturday and Sunday patterns. These come from the 295 shops flagged verified.

An expectation. Easter Monday in England and Wales, where we show the shop’s Sunday pattern because most of the estate trades that way on a bank holiday Monday, with its normal Monday hours alongside so you can see both. A minority of shops keep full weekday hours.

The 1,111 shops flagged standard pattern have not been verified individually, and a further 20 have no hours at all and say so. Nothing over Easter is a closure: the only date that shuts every shop in Great Britain is Christmas Day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Betfred open on Good Friday?

Yes, on ordinary Friday hours. The belief that betting shops close on Good Friday is out of date rather than wrong: it was a legal closure for decades, until the Gambling Act 2005 removed it. Of the 295 shops whose hours we have verified, 294 open by 09:00 on a Friday and the closings run from 20:00 to 22:00 as on any other weekday.

Is Betfred open on Easter Sunday?

Yes, on its ordinary Sunday hours. Easter Sunday is not a bank holiday anywhere in the United Kingdom, so nothing about it changes betting shop hours. It is worth remembering that Sunday hours are already the shortest of the week: 194 of the verified shops are open by 09:00 and 65 do not open until 10:00.

Is Betfred open on Easter Monday?

Yes, but this is the day that changes. Easter Monday is a bank holiday in England and Wales, where most shops trade their Sunday pattern instead of a weekday one, costing an average of 1h 49m of trading. It is not a bank holiday in Scotland at all, so Scottish shops keep ordinary Monday hours. Search your postcode and pick Easter Monday to see which applies near you.

What time does Betfred open on Easter Monday?

In England and Wales, expect the shop's Sunday opening rather than its weekday one, which is typically half an hour to an hour later. In Scotland, expect the normal Monday time. Each result on this page shows the expected figure and the shop's normal hours side by side, so you can see both.

Is Easter Saturday a bank holiday?

No. Easter Saturday is not a bank holiday in any part of the UK, and betting shops trade their ordinary Saturday hours, which in most branches is the earliest start of the week. It is also the busiest of the four days for racing and football.

Do the clocks affect Easter opening times?

In 2027, yes, in a small way. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, which is also the night British Summer Time begins, so the clocks go forward at 01:00 and the night before Easter Sunday is an hour shorter. Stated opening times do not change, but the morning arrives an hour earlier in real terms. Easter 2028 is in mid-April, well after the change.

Why are supermarkets shut on Easter Sunday but Betfred is open?

Because the Sunday Trading Act restriction on Easter Sunday applies to large retail shops in England and Wales, not to betting premises. A betting shop sells a service under a Gambling Commission premises licence and is not covered by it, which is why the bookmaker can be open while the big shop next door is closed.

How much of the Easter weekend is Betfred actually open?

An average of 48h 40m across the four days, against 50h 07m for the same four days in an ordinary week — a loss of about 1h 26m, essentially all of it on Easter Monday. The best-served shops manage 56 hours across the weekend. When you search, the results include a four-day summary for your area and a four-day total on every shop.

Is there racing on Good Friday?

Yes, though not for long in historical terms. Britain had no Good Friday fixture at all until 2014, when Lingfield and Musselburgh staged the first cards. Before that a Good Friday in the shops meant foreign racing and football. Easter Saturday and Easter Monday have always been busy racing days.

Are these Easter times confirmed by Betfred?

The dates and which of them are bank holidays are certain. Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday hours come from each branch's published Friday, Saturday and Sunday patterns for the 295 verified shops. Easter Monday in England and Wales is an expectation based on the Sunday pattern, because no per-branch holiday timetable is published. The 1,111 shops flagged standard pattern have not been verified individually.
