Betfred New Year’s Opening Times

The turn of the year is the most confusing week in the betting calendar: an early close on New Year’s Eve, a late start on New Year’s Day, and a second holiday in Scotland that England and Wales do not keep. Search any postcode, town, city or village for your nearest shops, pick any date from Hogmanay to the 4th, and see the whole run for one shop at a time.

New Year at Betfred, in one look

New Year’s Eve
Thursday 31 December 2026 — not a bank holiday. Normal opening, early close
New Year’s Day
Friday 1 January 2027 — a bank holiday across Great Britain. Open, but a later start
How much later
132 of the 295 verified shops open an hour later on their Sunday pattern, 98 half an hour later, 49 no later at all — an average of 42 minutes
2 January
A Saturday in 2027, and a holiday in Scotland only. The Scottish bank holiday moves to Monday 4 January
Midnight bets
Not in a shop. Betting premises are licensed to 22:00, so nothing is open at the bells
Closed all day
Only Christmas Day, which is the week before. Every New Year date is a trading day

The five dates of the 2026 to 2027 turn

Five consecutive days, three different rules, and a split between Scotland and the rest of Great Britain in the middle of it. Every one of them is a trading day.

The pattern to hold on to is that the two ends of the week are the awkward ones. New Year’s Eve is reliable at the start of the day and unreliable at the end; New Year’s Day is the reverse, unreliable at the start and normal at the end. In between, 2 and 3 January are close to ordinary days for most of the estate.

New Year’s Day: how much later is the start?

Every Betfred shop opens on New Year’s Day. The question is when, and the honest answer is that Betfred does not publish a per-branch New Year timetable — so this page uses each shop’s own Sunday pattern, which is the closest published proxy for a bank holiday opening.

So for most shops New Year’s Day means a start between half an hour and an hour behind a normal day, with 49 of the 295 verified branches opening at their usual time because their Sunday and weekday openings already match. 65 shops have a 10:00 Sunday opening, and those are the ones where a New Year’s Day morning trip is most likely to be wasted.

The closing time is the more dependable half of the day. Sunday closings run to 22:00 in 117 of the verified shops, so a shop that is slow to open on 1 January will usually still be trading into the evening.

New Year’s Eve: the early close

31 December is not a bank holiday and shops treat the morning as normal: the opening time you see for a Thursday in 2026, or a Friday in 2027, is the opening time you will get. What moves is the close. Expect an early-evening finish rather than the usual 21:00 or 22:00, because staff are going home before the bells and the sporting card thins out.

Because that early close is a local decision rather than an estate-wide policy, this page does not invent a time for it. Results on New Year’s Eve show the opening you can rely on and flag the close as early, and the shop’s normal closing time is shown alongside so you can see what is being given up. If your plan depends on a bet at seven in the evening on the 31st, that is the one call worth making in advance.

Of the verified shops, 145 would normally trade to 22:00 on that weekday. Assume all of them finish earlier on New Year’s Eve.

Scotland’s second day

Scotland keeps two new-year holidays where England and Wales keep one. That single difference produces most of the confusion in this week, and it changes shape from year to year depending on which day 2 January lands on.

In the 2026 to 2027 turn, 2 January is a Saturday. It is still a Scottish holiday in spirit — Scottish shops are the ones most likely to open late on the 2nd — but the bank holiday itself moves to Monday 4 January 2027, which becomes the quietest trading day of the Scottish festive run. English and Welsh shops treat both the 2nd and the 4th as ordinary days.

The search on this page reads the country each shop sits in and applies the right rule to it. Pick 2 January and a Glasgow shop will show a later start while a Bolton shop shows an ordinary Saturday; pick 4 January and the Glasgow shop moves to Sunday-style hours while the Bolton one trades a normal Monday. Roughly one Betfred shop in eight is in Scotland, so for many searches both answers appear in the same list.

Why you cannot bet in a shop at midnight

A betting premises licence permits opening between 07:00 and 22:00 unless a specific licence says otherwise, and nothing in this estate trades past 22:00 on any day of the year. There is no late licence for Hogmanay, no midnight opening, and no shop taking counter bets as the year turns.

That has a practical consequence for anyone who likes a New Year’s Day bet: the last chance to put one on over a counter is the early close on 31 December, and the next is mid-morning on 1 January. Between roughly seven in the evening and nine or ten the next morning, the app is the only option. Ante-post bets on the Cheltenham and Musselburgh cards can be struck on the 31st, before the shutters come down.

Racing on New Year’s Day

New Year’s Day is a proper racing day rather than a token one. Cheltenham stages a New Year’s Day meeting, Musselburgh runs its own card just outside Edinburgh, and there is usually jumps racing at Exeter and Ffos Las in the mix, with football through the afternoon. That is why shops open at all on 1 January, and why the late start matters more than the close: the first races go in the early afternoon, well after even a 10:00 opening.

We have no evidence that shops open earlier than their Sunday pattern for the New Year’s Day card. If a particular branch does, its Google listing is the likeliest place to find out, and every result here links to it.

The 2027 to 2028 turn

A year later the calendar rearranges itself, because New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday and 2 January on a Sunday. Both dates are in the selector, so you can plan a year ahead.

The 2027 to 2028 turn of year
DateDayWhat it isWhat to expect
31 Dec 2027FridayNew Year’s Eve Normal opening, early close. Not a bank holiday.
1 Jan 2028SaturdayNew Year’s Day Open, later start likely. The bank holiday itself moves to the Monday, but the day is still a late one.
3 Jan 2028MondayNew Year’s Day substitute, all of Great Britain Sunday-style hours likely. The substitute bank holiday, kept everywhere.
4 Jan 2028Tuesday2 January substitute, Scotland only Sunday-style hours in Scotland. England and Wales trade an ordinary Tuesday.

That is the awkward version of the calendar: because both new-year dates fall at the weekend, Scotland ends up with substitutes on consecutive working days, and the two nations diverge on the Tuesday.

How confident each time is

Four different kinds of statement appear on this page, and they are not equally solid.

Certain. The dates, their national scope, and the substitution rule. Also the 22:00 ceiling: no shop trades past it, so there is no midnight betting in a shop.

The shop’s own hours. The New Year’s Eve opening time, and the ordinary days in the middle of the week. These come from published branch times for the 295 shops flagged verified.

A published proxy. New Year’s Day and substitute-day openings, where we show the shop’s own Sunday pattern because that is the closest thing to a bank holiday timetable that exists in the data. It is a reasoned estimate, not an announcement.

Flagged as unknown. The New Year’s Eve closing time, which we will not invent, and the 1,111 shops marked standard pattern whose weekly hours we have not verified individually. A further 20 have no hours at all and say so.

Frequently asked questions

Is Betfred open on New Year's Day?

Yes, everywhere. New Year's Day is a bank holiday but not a closing day for betting shops: the only date they must close is Christmas Day. What changes is the start. Most shops open later than usual, and this page uses each branch's own Sunday pattern as the closest published guide: 132 of the 295 verified shops open an hour later on that pattern, 98 half an hour later, and 49 at their usual time.

What time does Betfred open on 1 January 2027?

Expect between 09:00 and 10:00 in most shops, against an 08:00 to 09:00 weekday start. 65 of the verified shops have a 10:00 Sunday opening and those are the latest. The first race of the day, at Cheltenham or Musselburgh, is in the early afternoon, so even a 10:00 opening leaves time.

What time does Betfred close on New Year's Eve?

Earlier than usual, though the opening time is unchanged. 31 December is not a bank holiday, so shops open as normal and then finish in the early evening rather than at 21:00 or 22:00. Because the early close is a local decision we do not invent a time for it: results show the reliable opening and flag the close as early, with the shop's normal closing time alongside.

Can I place a bet in a Betfred shop at midnight on New Year's Eve?

No. Betting premises are licensed to open between 07:00 and 22:00, and nothing in the estate trades past 22:00 on any day. There is no late licence for Hogmanay. The last counter bet of the year goes on during the early close on the 31st, and the next is mid-morning on the 1st; in between, the app is the only option.

Is Betfred open on 2 January?

Yes, but the day means different things in different places. 2 January is a Scottish holiday, so Scottish branches are the ones most likely to open late; in England and Wales it is an ordinary day. In 2027 it falls on a Saturday, which pushes the Scottish bank holiday itself to Monday 4 January.

Why does Scotland have an extra new-year holiday?

Scotland keeps both 1 and 2 January, where England and Wales keep only the 1st. It is a long-standing part of the Scottish calendar rather than anything to do with gambling law. The practical effect here is that Scottish shops have two soft days rather than one, and when 2 January falls at a weekend the holiday moves to the next working day.

How do I check my nearest shop's New Year times?

Type any UK postcode, town, city or village into the search box, or tap Use my current location. You will get the twelve closest shops, a date selector running from New Year's Eve to 4 January, and an expandable timeline on each shop showing the whole turn of the year in one place, including the 2027 to 2028 dates.

Does Betfred open on New Year's Day in Scotland too?

Yes. 1 January is a bank holiday across Great Britain and shops open everywhere, with the same later start. Scotland's difference is the extra day on the 2nd, not the 1st.

When is the New Year bank holiday in 2028?

New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday and 2 January on a Sunday, so the substitutes move to Monday 3 January across Great Britain and Tuesday 4 January in Scotland. Shops trade on the Saturday itself with a later start, then Sunday-style hours on the substitute days. All four dates are in the selector on this page.

Are these New Year times confirmed by Betfred?

No, and the page separates what is certain from what is not. The dates and their national scope are fixed by statute. The New Year's Eve opening time comes from published branch hours for 295 verified shops. The New Year's Day opening is a reasoned proxy based on each shop's Sunday pattern, because no per-branch holiday timetable is published. The New Year's Eve closing time we leave flagged as early rather than guessing it.
