Betfred Opening Times Monday

Monday is where the bank holidays live. Nine of the seventeen bank holidays left before 2028 fall on a Monday, which makes it the one weekday where the date matters more than the day. Search any postcode, town, city or village, then pick any Monday from the calendar and see exactly what your nearest shops will do — and how much trading you lose if it is a holiday.

Why Monday is the awkward one

Every other day of the week has at most two calendar exceptions before 2028. Wednesday has none at all. Monday has nine.

That is a quirk of how UK bank holidays are built. The early May, spring and August holidays are defined as Mondays outright. Easter Monday is a Monday by definition. And whenever Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day lands at a weekend, the substitute day moves to the next working day, which is usually a Monday. Add Scotland’s 2 January and St Andrew’s Day when they happen to fall right, and Monday collects more than half of the entire bank holiday calendar.

For opening times that matters, because a bank holiday Monday is not an ordinary Monday in a betting shop. Most branches move to their Sunday pattern — a later start, often an earlier finish — while a minority trade a full weekday. Nothing closes, apart from Christmas Day, which never falls on a Monday in this cycle.

So on this page the day of the week is not enough. Pick the actual Monday from the calendar above and the results recalculate for that date, shop by shop, using the right national calendar for each branch.

The nine bank holiday Mondays

30 November 2026MondaySt Andrew's DayScotland onlyOpen, ordinary Monday hoursA Scottish bank holiday, but not a shop-closing one: banks and some council offices shut and the high street trades as usual.
28 December 2026MondayBoxing Day substituteEngland, Wales and ScotlandOpen, Sunday-style hours likelyThe substitute for Boxing Day, which fell on a Saturday in 2026. The quietest day of the festive run and the one most likely to run Sunday hours.
4 January 2027Monday2 January substituteScotland onlyOpen, Sunday-style hours likelyScotland keeps a second new-year holiday. Because 2 January 2027 is a Saturday, it moves to this Monday.
29 March 2027MondayEaster MondayEngland and Wales onlyOpen, Sunday-style hours likelyA bank holiday in England and Wales but not in Scotland, where shops simply trade a normal Monday.
3 May 2027MondayEarly May bank holidayEngland, Wales and ScotlandOpen, Sunday-style hours likelyThe first Monday in May. Most shops move to their Sunday pattern.
31 May 2027MondaySpring bank holidayEngland, Wales and ScotlandOpen, Sunday-style hours likelyThe last Monday in May, and the week of the Derby meeting at Epsom.
2 August 2027MondaySummer bank holiday (Scotland)Scotland onlyOpen, Sunday-style hours likelyScotland takes its summer holiday on the first Monday in August, four weeks before England and Wales.
30 August 2027MondaySummer bank holiday (E&W)England and Wales onlyOpen, Sunday-style hours likelyThe last Monday in August in England and Wales. Scottish shops trade a normal Monday.
27 December 2027MondayChristmas Day substituteEngland, Wales and ScotlandOpen, Sunday-style hours likelyThe substitute for Christmas Day 2027, which falls on a Saturday. Shops are open, unlike the 25th itself.

Christmas Day is the only date that closes every betting shop in Great Britain, and it does not fall on a Monday in either year — it is a Friday in 2026 and a Saturday in 2027. So no Monday in this period is a full closure.

What a bank holiday Monday actually costs you

Across the 295 shops whose hours we have verified, swapping a weekday pattern for a Sunday one costs an average of 1h 49m of trading. The loss is not spread evenly: it is mostly a later opening.

Weekday hours against Sunday hours, verified shops
 Ordinary MondayBank holiday Monday, Sunday-styleDifference

253 of the verified shops would trade shorter hours on a bank holiday Monday, 36 would be unchanged because their Sunday and weekday hours already match, and 6 would actually trade longer. When you select a holiday Monday above, each shop in your results shows its own figure rather than this average — some lose half an hour, some lose four.

When the nations disagree

Four of the nine Monday holidays apply in one nation and not the other, which is why this page reads the country each shop sits in rather than applying one calendar to everything.

Monday bank holidays by nation, to the end of 2027
WhereMonday holidaysWhich ones
England & Wales6 Boxing Day substitute 2026, Easter Monday, early May, spring, August (last Monday), Christmas Day substitute 2027
Scotland7 St Andrew’s Day 2026, Boxing Day substitute 2026, 2 January substitute, early May, spring, August (first Monday), Christmas Day substitute 2027

The two that catch people out are Easter Monday, which is not a bank holiday in Scotland at all, and the August holiday, which Scotland takes on the first Monday of the month and England and Wales on the last — four weeks apart. Pick either in the calendar and the results will tell you plainly which of your nearby shops are affected and which are simply having an ordinary Monday.

Branch hours are published as a single Monday-to-Friday figure, so these are the same numbers you would see for a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. What makes Monday different is the calendar, not the rota.

How confident each time is

Verified — 295 shops whose weekly hours come from published branch times. Every hours figure on this page comes from these shops alone.

Standard pattern — 1,111 shops we have not verified individually, shown on the estate’s usual weekday shape as a working expectation. A further 20 shops have no hours at all and say so.

There are three different kinds of claim on this page and they are not equally solid. The dates are certain: the nine Monday bank holidays are fixed by statute and by the substitution rule, and the national scope of each is a matter of law. The ordinary Monday hours are as good as the branch data, with the usual caveat that they are published as one Monday-to-Friday figure. The bank holiday hours are an expectation, not an announcement: most of the estate trades its Sunday pattern on a holiday Monday, a minority keeps full weekday hours, and Betfred does not publish a per-branch holiday timetable. Each result shows the Sunday figure and the normal figure side by side so you can see both.

Frequently asked questions

Are Betfred shops open on bank holiday Mondays?

Yes. No Monday bank holiday closes a betting shop — the only date that does is Christmas Day, which falls on a Friday in 2026 and a Saturday in 2027. What changes on a holiday Monday is the shape of the day: most shops move to their Sunday pattern, which across the 295 verified shops means about 1h 49m less trading, mostly through a later opening.

What time does Betfred open on a Monday?

On an ordinary Monday the openings split three ways inside a single hour: 103 of the 295 verified shops open at 09:00, 97 at 08:30 and 93 at 08:00, so 294 are trading by 09:00. On a bank holiday Monday expect the shop's Sunday opening instead, which is typically half an hour to an hour later.

How many bank holiday Mondays are there?

Nine between now and the end of 2027, out of 66 Mondays in total. That is more than half of all the bank holidays left in that period, which is why Monday is the one weekday where you need to check the date rather than the day. 6 of the nine apply in England and Wales, 7 in Scotland.

Which Mondays are bank holidays?

St Andrew's Day on 30 November 2026 (Scotland), the Boxing Day substitute on 28 December 2026, the 2 January substitute on 4 January 2027 (Scotland), Easter Monday on 29 March 2027 (England and Wales), early May on 3 May, spring on 31 May, the Scottish summer holiday on 2 August, the English and Welsh summer holiday on 30 August, and the Christmas Day substitute on 27 December 2027. All nine are clickable in the calendar on this page.

Is Easter Monday a bank holiday in Scotland?

No. Easter Monday is a bank holiday in England and Wales but not in Scotland, so Scottish branches trade an ordinary Monday on 29 March 2027 while English and Welsh ones are likely to run Sunday hours. Select Easter Monday in the calendar and the results tell you which of your nearby shops are affected.

Why is the August bank holiday different in Scotland?

Scotland takes its summer holiday on the first Monday in August and England and Wales on the last, so in 2027 they fall on 2 August and 30 August — four weeks apart. Each is a holiday in one nation only, and this page applies the right one to each shop based on the country it sits in.

How much shorter is a bank holiday Monday?

It varies by branch, which is why the results show each shop's own figure. Across the verified estate, 253 shops would trade shorter hours on a holiday Monday, 36 would be unchanged because their Sunday and weekday hours already match, and 6 would actually trade longer. The average loss among those affected is 1h 49m.

Are Monday hours the same as the rest of the week?

On an ordinary Monday, yes. Branch hours are published as a single Monday-to-Friday figure, so the Monday shown for each shop is identical to its Tuesday through Friday. Monday is only different because of what lands on it in the calendar, not because shops run a different rota.

Is Betfred ever closed on a Monday?

Not in this period. Christmas Day is the one date when every betting shop in Great Britain must close, and it is a Friday in 2026 and a Saturday in 2027, so no Monday before 2028 is a full closure. Every bank holiday Monday is a trading day, just a shorter one in most shops.

Are bank holiday Monday times confirmed by Betfred?

No, and the page is explicit about it. The dates and their national scope are certain. The ordinary Monday hours come from published branch times for 295 shops. The holiday hours are an expectation: most of the estate trades its Sunday pattern on a bank holiday Monday and a minority keeps full weekday hours, so each result shows both figures side by side. If the trip matters, ring the shop.
