What a Betfred Sunday actually looks like

There is no single Betfred Sunday. Among the 295 shops whose hours we have verified from published branch times, 09:00 is the most common opening and 22:00 the most common close, but the spread runs from an 08:00 start in parts of west London to a 10:00 start in dozens of suburban branches, and from a 22:00 finish to a 16:00 one.

Why Sunday is the shortest day

Of the verified shops, 253 trade fewer hours on a Sunday than on a Monday, 36 keep identical hours, and only 6 trade longer. The average verified Sunday is 11h 22m, against 12h 55m on a Monday and 12h 53m on a Saturday — so a Sunday is typically an hour and a half shorter than a weekday and two hours shorter than a Saturday.

The reasons are commercial rather than legal. Sunday footfall on a high street is lower and arrives later, the racing card starts and finishes earlier than a summer Saturday, and a shop that would be staffed by two people on a Saturday afternoon is often staffed by one on a Sunday. The pattern that results is a later opening far more often than an earlier close: 65 of the verified shops do not open until 10:00 or later, while 117 still trade right through to 22:00.

That asymmetry is worth knowing if you are planning a morning bet. On a Saturday you can reasonably expect a shop to be open by 09:00. On a Sunday, in more than a fifth of verified branches, you cannot.

The earliest, latest and longest Sundays

Longest Sunday trading

Fourteen hours, 08:00 to 22:00, and every one of them in London or the western suburbs where Sunday footfall justifies it.

Earliest Sunday opening

If you want a bet before the first race, these are the shops that let you.

Shortest Sunday trading

Six hours in two cases, both in shopping-centre units where the centre’s own Sunday hours set the limit.

England, Scotland and Wales

Sunday hours are set branch by branch rather than nation by nation, but the verified sample does show a pattern: Scottish shops in it run slightly shorter Sundays than English ones, and are more likely to use a 10:00 start.

Verified Sunday hours by country
CountryVerified shopsAverage Sunday Most commonShops on it
England27411h 25m09:00–22:0074
Scotland1410h 40m10:00–18:004
Wales711h 04m09:00–20:303

The verified sample is heavily weighted towards England, so treat the Scottish and Welsh rows as indicative rather than definitive. Nothing in Scottish or Welsh law shortens a betting shop’s Sunday.

The law: no six-hour rule for betting shops

A common assumption is that Betfred must close early on a Sunday for the same reason a large supermarket does. It does not. The Sunday Trading Act restriction — six hours of trading between 10:00 and 18:00 — applies to shops over 280 square metres selling goods. A betting shop sells a service under a premises licence from the Gambling Commission, and that licence puts no cap on Sunday hours.

There is one day when the law does close every shop, and it is not a Sunday: Christmas Day. When Christmas Day falls on a Sunday, as it does in 2033, every betting shop in Great Britain is shut regardless of its normal Sunday pattern. Boxing Day falling on a Sunday, as it does in 2027, has no such effect — shops trade their Sunday hours and the bank holiday moves to the Monday.

What there is to bet on on a Sunday

Sunday trading in betting shops is younger than most customers assume. British Sunday racing began in 1992, betting shops were not allowed to open on Sundays until 1995, and the hours they could trade were restricted until the Gambling Act 2005 removed the limits. What was once a dead day is now a full card: two or three British meetings, Irish racing from Naas, Navan or Leopardstown, Sunday football across Europe, and evening greyhounds.

That shapes the hours you see. A shop with a 10:00 opening is not missing much — the first British race on a Sunday rarely goes before 13:30 — whereas the 22:00 close matters, because late European football and evening greyhound cards run well into the night.

Shopping centre branches

Sunday is when a shopping-centre branch differs most from a high-street one. A centre that opens 11:00 to 17:00 on a Sunday gives its Betfred unit a six-hour day whatever the shop would otherwise do, which is exactly why the two shortest Sundays in the verified data are centre units. Search results flag branches that look like centre units, and for those the centre’s Sunday hours are the ones to check.

How confident each time is

Two different kinds of Sunday time appear on this page, and the results label them.

Verified — 295 shops whose weekly hours, including the Sunday, come from published branch times. The statistics on this page are built only from these, because averaging invented numbers would be worthless.

Standard pattern — 1110 shops we have not been able to verify individually. For those, the results show the estate’s usual Sunday shape so you have a working expectation, clearly marked as an assumption rather than a fact. A further 21 shops have no hours at all and say so.

Sunday is the day where that distinction bites hardest, because it is the day branches vary most. If your Sunday depends on the shop being open at a particular hour, use the Google listing link on the row to cross-check, or ring the shop.

Frequently asked questions

Are Betfred shops open on Sundays?

Yes. Every Betfred shop that trades a full week opens on a Sunday, and has done since Sunday opening was allowed in the mid-1990s. What changes is the shape of the day rather than whether the doors open: Sunday is the shortest trading day in most branches, with a later start and usually an earlier close than the rest of the week.

What time does Betfred open on a Sunday?

Across the 295 shops whose hours we have verified, 09:00 is the most common Sunday opening, used by 163 of them. 194 open by 09:00 and 65 do not open until 10:00 or later. Search your postcode above and each nearby shop shows its own Sunday time rather than an estate average.

What time does Betfred close on a Sunday?

117 of the 295 verified shops trade until 22:00 on a Sunday, the same as their weekday close. At the other end, 46 shut before 19:00, and the shortest Sunday in the estate is 10:00 to 16:00. The spread is why a single figure is no use: check the individual shop.

Is Sunday shorter than the rest of the week at Betfred?

Almost always. Of the verified shops, 253 trade fewer hours on Sunday than on Monday, 36 keep the same hours, and only 6 trade longer. The average verified Sunday is 11h 22m against 12h 55m on a Monday and 12h 53m on a Saturday.

Does the six-hour Sunday trading rule apply to betting shops?

No. The Sunday Trading Act restriction that limits large retail shops to six hours on a Sunday applies to shops over 280 square metres selling goods, not to betting premises. A Betfred shop can legally trade all day on a Sunday, and many do. The shorter hours you see are a commercial decision about footfall and staffing, not a legal cap.

Is there racing to bet on on a Sunday?

Yes, and that is the reason Sunday trading exists at all in betting shops. Sunday racing began in Britain in 1992, betting shops were allowed to open on Sundays from 1995, and the Gambling Act 2005 removed the remaining restrictions on hours. A normal Sunday now carries two or three British meetings, Irish racing, and a full football and greyhound card.

How do I find my nearest Betfred’s Sunday hours?

Type any UK postcode, town, city or village into the search box at the top of this page, or tap Use my current location. You will get the twelve closest shops with the Sunday hours for each, and you can re-sort them by earliest opening, latest close or longest Sunday if getting a bet on early or late matters more than the walk.

Are all these Sunday times confirmed?

No, and the page tells you which is which. 295 shops carry hours verified from published branch times and are flagged verified. The remaining 1110 are flagged standard pattern: we show the estate’s usual Sunday shape because that branch has not been confirmed. On Sunday the gap between branches is at its widest, so the flag is worth reading before you travel.

Do shopping centre branches have different Sunday hours?

Yes, and Sunday is when it matters most. A shop inside a centre can only trade while the centre is open, and centre Sunday hours are often 11:00 to 17:00. Branches in centres such as Merry Hill, Crystal Peaks, Templars Square and The Galleries are flagged in the search results; for those, the centre’s Sunday hours are the binding ones.

What happens when a bank holiday falls on a Sunday?

The Sunday itself trades as a normal Sunday, and the substitute bank holiday on the Monday is the day that changes — most shops run Sunday-style hours on it. Boxing Day 2027 is the next example: it falls on a Sunday, so shops keep Sunday hours on the 26th and the substitute holidays follow on the Monday and Tuesday.
