Betfred Opening Times Thursday

Thursday is the most ordinary day of the Betfred week — and that is useful information. There are no Thursday bank holidays between now and 2028, and only two Thursdays in that whole stretch when a shop does anything unusual. Search any postcode, town, city or village for your nearest branches, their Thursday hours, and their whole week at a glance.

Thursdays that differ
Two, both in December 2026: Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, when shops close early

The most ordinary day of the week

Every other day of the Betfred week has a complication. Saturday opens early for the coupon trade, Sunday runs short, Monday collects most of the year’s bank holidays, Friday catches Christmas Day and Good Friday in this cycle. Thursday has almost none of that.

Between now and the end of 2027 there is no Thursday bank holiday at all, and only two Thursdays where any shop does something out of the ordinary — Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve 2026, both of which fall on a Thursday and both of which mean an early close rather than a closure. Every other Thursday in that period is simply the shop’s weekday pattern.

That makes this the most reliable day to plan around, and it makes the figures here the ones to use for a Tuesday or a Wednesday too. The hours are published as a single weekday rota, so a Thursday is a Tuesday is a Wednesday in every shop we have verified.

Where Thursday does have a character of its own is the sport. Mid-week festival days, evening racing through the summer and Thursday night European football all land on it, which is why the late closings matter: 279 of the 295 verified shops are still trading after 20:00.

The weekly rhythm, day by day

The average trading day across the 295 verified shops, Monday to Sunday. Five identical weekdays, a Saturday within two minutes of them, and a Sunday an hour and a half shorter.

Saturday12h 53m08:00–22:0085
Sunday11h 22m09:00–22:0077

Each shop in the search results carries the same idea as a bar strip: seven bars, one per day, with Thursday picked out. In most shops it shows five level bars, a Saturday that matches them and a visibly shorter Sunday. Where a shop breaks that shape — and a few do — the strip shows it immediately.

What a Betfred Thursday actually looks like

The openings divide almost evenly three ways within a single hour. The closings are where the estate spreads out, across five different times from 18:00 to 22:00.

The two Thursdays that close early

Both fall in the same fortnight, and neither is a bank holiday. Select either above the search box to see it applied to the shops nearest you.

Thursdays that differ, 2026 and 2027
DateWhat it isWhat to expect
24 Dec 2026Thursday Christmas Eve Open as usual, early close likely. The last chance to bet over a counter before the Christmas Day closure, so shops get busy in the afternoon and then shut in the late afternoon or early evening rather than at their usual 21:00 or 22:00.
31 Dec 2026Thursday New Year’s Eve Open as usual, early close likely. Normal opening time, then an early evening finish well before midnight. Not a bank holiday, so there is no later start to worry about.

On both dates the opening time is the reliable figure and the closing time is not, because the early close is a local decision rather than an estate-wide policy. Rather than invent a time, the results show the opening you can count on and flag the close as early. If your bet depends on being there at 18:00 on Christmas Eve, that is the one call worth making in advance.

Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve 2027 both fall on a Friday, which is why only 2026 appears here. The Christmas page covers that whole fortnight day by day.

Thursday racing and Thursday night football

Thursday is the quiet workhorse of the betting week, but it carries more than its reputation suggests. The big spring and summer festivals all have a Thursday: Cheltenham’s third day, the opening day of the Grand National meeting at Aintree, Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot and the Ebor meeting at York are all Thursday fixtures. Through the summer, Thursday evening cards at tracks such as Newmarket, Doncaster and Chelmsford run into the night.

The football adds to it. European competition has settled into Thursday night, with Europa League and Conference League kick-offs at 20:00 and later, and there is an evening greyhound card most weeks. That combination is what the late closings serve: a shop shutting at 20:00 is no use for a 20:00 kick-off, whereas the 145 shops that run to 22:00 cover the full evening.

One honest caveat: we have no evidence that Betfred extends its hours for festival Thursdays. Published weekday hours are what they are, and a shop that closes at 21:00 in March probably closes at 21:00 on Cheltenham Thursday too. If a branch does stay open later for a big meeting, its Google listing is the likeliest place to see it.

England, Scotland and Wales

Weekdays are the most uniform part of the week across the three nations, and Thursday is no exception. Nothing in Scottish or Welsh law changes what a betting shop may do on a Thursday, and the verified averages sit within a few minutes of each other.

How confident each time is

Verified — 295 shops whose weekly hours come from published branch times. Every figure on this page is calculated from these shops alone.

Standard pattern — 1,110 shops we have not verified individually, shown on the estate’s usual weekday shape as a working expectation rather than a fact. A further 21 shops have no hours at all and say so.

There is one structural limitation worth repeating here, because it applies to this page more than most. Branch hours are published as a single Monday-to-Friday figure rather than five separate days, so the Thursday shown for every shop is by definition the same as its Monday. If an individual branch runs slightly different hours on a Thursday, published weekday hours would not reveal it and neither would we. The Google listing link on each row is the place to cross-check.

Nothing on this page is a legal certainty in the way the Christmas Day closure is, because no Thursday in this period is Christmas Day. The nearest thing to a hard fact here is the early close on the two December eves, and even that is a pattern rather than a rule.

Frequently asked questions

What time does Betfred open on a Thursday?

The openings divide almost evenly three ways inside a single hour. Of the 295 shops whose hours we have verified, 103 open at 09:00, 97 at 08:30 and 93 at 08:00, which means 294 of 295 are trading by 09:00. One shop opens at 07:30 and one not until 10:00.

What time does Betfred close on a Thursday?

145 of the 295 verified shops trade until 22:00 and 279 are open past 20:00, with the rest finishing at 20:00, 20:30, 21:00 or 21:30. The earliest close in the verified estate is 18:00, at a single precinct unit. If you are betting on Thursday night European football, the closing time is the figure that matters.

Are Betfred's Thursday hours the same as Tuesday and Wednesday?

Yes, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Branch hours are published as a single Monday-to-Friday figure rather than five separate days, so for every shop we have verified the Thursday is identical to the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. That means the figures on this page work for any weekday. It also means a branch running slightly different Thursday hours would not show up in the published data.

Are there any Thursday bank holidays?

None between now and the end of 2027. UK bank holidays cluster on Mondays, with Good Friday and the two Christmas dates falling elsewhere in the week, and in this cycle none of them lands on a Thursday. That makes Thursday the most predictable day of the Betfred week.

Which Thursdays does Betfred close early?

Two, both in December 2026: Christmas Eve on the 24th and New Year's Eve on the 31st, which both fall on a Thursday that year. Neither is a bank holiday, so shops open at their normal time; the change is at the other end of the day, with an early afternoon or early evening finish rather than the usual 21:00 or 22:00. Both are selectable above the search box.

Is Betfred open on Christmas Eve?

Yes. Christmas Eve is not a bank holiday and shops trade, but expect an early close. It is also the last chance to bet over a counter before Christmas Day, when every betting shop in Great Britain is shut by law, so the afternoon of the 24th is busy and the shutters come down earlier than usual.

Is there racing on a Thursday?

Plenty. Every major festival has a Thursday - Cheltenham's third day, the opening day of the Aintree Grand National meeting, Ladies' Day at Royal Ascot and the Ebor meeting at York among them - and summer Thursdays carry evening cards at tracks such as Newmarket, Doncaster and Chelmsford. Thursday night also has European football and an evening greyhound card.

Do shops stay open later for festival Thursdays?

We have no evidence that they do, and we are not going to claim it. Published weekday hours are the same in March as in November, so a shop that closes at 21:00 most Thursdays very probably closes at 21:00 on Cheltenham Thursday too. If a particular branch extends its hours for a big meeting, its Google listing is the likeliest place to find out, and every row here links to it.

How do I find my nearest Betfred's Thursday hours?

Type any UK postcode, town, city or village into the search box, or tap Use my current location. You will get the twelve closest shops with Thursday hours for each, a bar strip showing that shop's whole week with Thursday picked out, and the option to sort by latest close or longest day rather than distance.

How long is a Thursday compared with the weekend?

The verified average is 12h 55m on a Thursday, which is identical to every other weekday and within two minutes of Saturday's 12h 53m. Sunday is the outlier at 11h 22m, roughly 1h 32m shorter, and almost all of that difference is a later Sunday start rather than an earlier finish.
