The evenings are the other way round: only 16 Peel Street in the town centre trades to 22:00, three shops close at 20:00 and three finish at 18:00 on a Sunday. Every Betfred in this list carries its own published weekly times. Peel Street is the only one in the town centre, just off Market Hill and a couple of minutes from the Interchange; the other three sit on the estates around it — Kendray to the south-east, Worsbrough Dale to the south and Athersley South to the north. Distances are straight-line estimates from Market Hill. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.
Barnsley Betfred opening times compared
The full weekly pattern for all six branches in one table, town shops first. Today’s column is highlighted.
Only Peel Street keeps the same hours Monday to Saturday; every other branch opens earlier on a Saturday, by half an hour at Kendray, Worsbrough Dale, Athersley South and Royston and by a full hour at Wombwell. Kendray and Royston share an identical week, 09:00 to 20:00 on weekdays, 08:30 to 20:00 on a Saturday and 10:00 to 18:00 on a Sunday. Wombwell is the outlier at both ends: the earliest Saturday opening in the borough at 07:30 and the second-latest Sunday close at 20:30.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Barnsley
Full weekly times are published for all six branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.
Open earliest
On a weekday, 16 Peel Street opens first at 08:00, with Worsbrough Dale and Athersley South at 08:30 and Kendray and Royston at 09:00. Saturday is where Barnsley stands out: Wombwell opens at 07:30, earlier than any other Betfred on this site, and Worsbrough Dale and Athersley South both start at 08:00. Five of the six open earlier on a Saturday than during the week.
Open latest
Peel Street is the only Barnsley branch trading until 22:00, and it holds that time seven days a week. Worsbrough Dale and Wombwell close at 21:00 on weekdays, and Kendray, Athersley South and Royston at 20:00. If you are out on the estates after 20:00, the town centre is the only option, which is worth remembering after an evening match at Oakwell.
The one to remember: 16 Peel Street runs 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday and 08:30 to 22:00 on a Sunday. It is the only shop in the borough open past 21:00 on any day, and the only one with a Sunday longer than twelve hours.
Betfred Barnsley Sunday opening times
Sunday splits the borough neatly in two: two branches open at 08:30 and trade late, while three do not open until 10:00 and close at 18:00.
| Shop | Opens | Closes | Find the shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peel Street (town centre)16 Peel Street, S70 1YA | 08:30 | 22:00 | |
| Wombwell (High Street)47/49 High Street, S73 8HS | 08:30 | 20:30 | |

| Royston (Midland Road)155 Midland Road, S71 4BY | 10:00 | 18:00 |
Peel Street and Wombwell are the two to head for on a Sunday, open from 08:30 and closing at 22:00 and 20:30 respectively. Worsbrough Dale runs 09:00 to 20:00. Kendray, Athersley South and Royston all close at 18:00, and Kendray and Royston do not open until 10:00, so they trade just eight hours — five and a half hours less than the town-centre shop.
Betfred Barnsley bank holiday opening times
Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all six Barnsley branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.
On the other bank holidays, Barnsley branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays — in Barnsley that would only shorten the Peel Street shop, since every other branch already closes at 20:00 or 21:00. Dates in the tables below update automatically.
Easter opening times
Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Barnsley branch to follow its usual pattern for that day. The Grand National at Aintree, about 70 miles west, falls in early April and is the busiest betting day of the year in South Yorkshire shops.
| Day | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal weekday times |
| Easter Saturday | Saturday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal Saturday times |
| Easter Sunday | First Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March | — | Normal Sunday times |
| Easter Monday | Day after Easter Sunday | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
May and August bank holidays
The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before, particularly at Peel Street where an early close makes a difference.
| Bank holiday | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May bank holiday | First Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Spring bank holiday | Last Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Summer bank holiday | Last Monday in August | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
Christmas and New Year opening times
The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Barnsley times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.
| Day | Date | Next date | Usual pattern in Barnsley |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | 24 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | — | Closed all day, every shop |
| Boxing Day | 26 December | — | Normal opening, close around 20:00 |
| Substitute bank holiday | When 25 or 26 December falls on a weekend | — | Normal times for that day |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January | — | Later start around 10:00, close around 20:00 |
Each Barnsley branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.
How the live opening times work
Everything live on this page reads the clock in Barnsley (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.
The panel at the top
The top panel covers the four Betfred branches within two miles of the town centre. It tells you how many are open right now, which is next to close, and how long until the last one shuts for the night. After the last close it switches to counting down to the first shop opening the next morning.
The shop rows
Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.
Map, directions and Street View
Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all six branches, Royston and Wombwell included.
Betfred in Royston and Wombwell
Two branches sit further out in the borough, about four miles from the town centre in opposite directions: Royston to the north-east and Wombwell to the south-east. Both publish full weekly times, so their live status is as exact as the town shops’.
Betfred in Royston and Wombwell 2 shops

Betfred, Royston (Midland Road)155 Midland Road, Royston, Barnsley S71 4BY
-
Betfred, Wombwell (High Street)47/49 High Street, Wombwell, Barnsley S73 8HS
Wombwell is the pick of the two and one of the most useful shops in the borough: 08:30 to 21:00 on weekdays, 07:30 to 21:00 on a Saturday and 08:30 to 20:30 on a Sunday. That 07:30 Saturday opening is the earliest we have recorded at any Betfred. Royston runs the quieter 09:00 to 20:00 pattern, dropping to 10:00 to 18:00 on a Sunday, and is the nearest branch to Cudworth and the northern villages.
Betfred near Barnsley
Barnsley sits between the Dearne Valley, Sheffield and Wakefield, and several nearby branches are listed under other post towns.
The closest are in the Dearne Valley: Goldthorpe on Barnsley Road and Thurnscoe on Kingsway are both inside the Barnsley borough but carry Rotherham postal addresses, so they do not appear in the count above. Beyond them there are branches at Mexborough and Swinton to the east, Hoyland and Chapeltown towards Sheffield, and South Elmsall, Hemsworth and Kinsley to the north in the Wakefield district. Sheffield, with 24 branches, is about twelve miles south.
Directory listings for “Betfred Barnsley” occasionally show further addresses in the borough, including a Park Road and a Gawber Road shop, whose current status and weekly times we have not been able to verify from a source that publishes them branch by branch. Rather than estimate, we have left them out until they can be confirmed. If you know their times, let us know and we will add the rows.
Other bookmakers in Barnsley
Barnsley town centre has a tight cluster of competing shops, and Betfred is not the biggest name in it.
The Ladbrokes at 13 Market Hill is about a hundred yards from the Peel Street Betfred and opens 08:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, matching it hour for hour. William Hill has shops at 51 Racecommon Road and on Kendray Street, and Coral trades at 269 Doncaster Road in Kendray, a few minutes from the Betfred on Birk Avenue, and at 226 Barnsley Road in Cudworth. Further out, William Hill has a branch near the Market Place in Hoyland.
We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Barnsley, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. The Market Hill Ladbrokes and the Peel Street Betfred are the two to know in the town centre: between them they cover 08:00 to 22:00 six days a week. Every bookmaker in the borough is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about 50 miles west across the Pennines. Barnsley is a small estate built around one town-centre shop and a ring of pit-village and estate branches: Peel Street just off Market Hill, then Kendray, Worsbrough Dale and Athersley South within two miles, and Royston and Wombwell about four miles out. It is a pattern you see across the old South Yorkshire coalfield, where the shops follow the villages rather than a city high street.
For travellers, 16 Peel Street is the one to know: a couple of minutes from Barnsley Interchange, where the buses and the Sheffield and Leeds trains meet, and about half a mile from Oakwell, home of Barnsley FC. It is also the only branch in the borough open until 22:00, so after an evening kick-off or a late finish it is the only realistic option. Wombwell and Royston both sit on their own village high streets, each a short walk from their local stations on the Sheffield-to-Leeds and Barnsley-to-Wakefield lines.
Frequently asked questions
- How many Betfred shops are there in Barnsley?
- Six Betfred branches in the Barnsley borough publish full weekly times: Peel Street in the town centre, Kendray, Worsbrough Dale, Athersley South, Royston and Wombwell. All are licensed by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. Directory listings sometimes show further Barnsley-area branches whose current times we have not been able to verify, and the Dearne Valley shops at Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe carry Rotherham postal addresses, so they are not counted here.
- What time does Betfred open in Barnsley?
- 16 Peel Street in the town centre is the earliest, opening at 08:00 on weekdays. Three branches open at 08:30 and two at 09:00. Saturday is the earliest morning across the borough: five of the six open sooner than they do midweek, and Wombwell opens at 07:30, the earliest Betfred opening time on this site.
- What time does Betfred close in Barnsley?
- Peel Street is the only Barnsley Betfred open until 22:00. Worsbrough Dale and Wombwell close at 21:00, and Kendray, Athersley South and Royston at 20:00. Barnsley closes earlier than most towns of its size, so the town-centre shop is the one to know for an evening bet.
- Which Betfred in Barnsley is open latest on a Sunday?
- 16 Peel Street, which trades 08:30 to 22:00 — the same closing time it keeps all week. Wombwell is next at 20:30 and Worsbrough Dale at 20:00. Kendray, Athersley South and Royston all close at 18:00, and the first two of those do not open until 10:00.
- Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
- No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
- Are Betfred shops in Barnsley open on bank holidays?
- Yes. Good Friday, Easter Monday and the May and August bank holidays are all trading days, usually on normal or slightly shortened hours. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which in Barnsley would only affect the Peel Street shop. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later.
- Which Betfred is nearest to Oakwell and Barnsley Interchange?
- 16 Peel Street is the closest to both, a couple of minutes from the Interchange and about half a mile from Oakwell, home of Barnsley FC. It is also the only branch in the borough open until 22:00, which makes it the obvious choice after an evening kick-off.
- How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Barnsley?
- Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of the six Barnsley Betfred shops.
