Brighton has the latest-closing Betfred estate on this site. Five of the six branches close at 22:00 and they hold that time seven days a week, Sunday included; only Coldean Lane on the northern edge closes earlier, at 21:00. St James’s Street in Kemptown runs 08:00 to 22:00 every single day of the week, and the Hove shop opens at 07:30 on a Saturday, the earliest opening we have recorded anywhere. Full published weekly times are available for every branch, so every countdown on this page is the shop’s own.

Every Betfred in this list carries its own published weekly times, and all four close at 22:00 seven days a week. Western Road covers the Churchill Square and station side of the centre, St James’s Street serves Kemptown and the seafront east of the Palace Pier, and London Road and Lewes Road run north and north-east out of the city. Distances are straight-line estimates from the Clock Tower. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.

Brighton Betfred opening times compared

The full weekly pattern for all six branches in one table, central shops first. Today’s column is highlighted.

Two branches run exactly the same hours all seven days: St James’s Street on 08:00 to 22:00 and Lewes Road on 09:00 to 22:00. Western Road, London Road and Coldean Lane keep their weekday times on a Saturday and then open later on a Sunday, by half an hour at Western Road and a full hour at London Road and Coldean. Hove is the only branch in the city that opens earlier on a Saturday than midweek, at 07:30.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Brighton

Full weekly times are published for all six branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.

Open earliest

Three branches open at 08:00 on weekdays: St James’s Street in Kemptown, London Road and Hove. Western Road follows at 08:30, with Lewes Road and Coldean Lane at 09:00. The single earliest opening of the week anywhere in the city is the Hove shop on a Saturday, at 07:30 — earlier than any other Betfred we have recorded. On a Sunday, St James’s Street opens at 08:00 and Hove at 08:30, while everything else waits until 09:00 or 10:00.

Open latest

Five of the six close at 22:00, and unusually they keep that time on a Sunday too. Only Coldean Lane closes earlier, at 21:00, and even that is later than the suburban norm in most cities. There is nothing in Brighton closing at 20:00 or 20:30 on any day of the week.

The longest day in the city: 124/125 St James’s Street in Kemptown runs 08:00 to 22:00 seven days a week — fourteen hours every day, including Sunday. It and Lewes Road are the only two branches here with no variation at all across the week, and Kemptown is the only one anywhere on this site with a fourteen-hour Sunday.

Betfred Brighton Sunday opening times

Sunday barely changes anything in Brighton. Five of the six branches still close at 22:00, and the only real difference is a slightly later start.

This is the strongest Sunday of any town covered on this site. Kemptown opens at 08:00 and Hove at 08:30, both running to 22:00, with Western Road, London Road and Lewes Road all open 09:00 to 22:00. Coldean Lane is the only branch that closes before 22:00, at 21:00, and the only one that does not open until 10:00.

Betfred Brighton bank holiday opening times

Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all six Brighton and Hove branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.

Bank holidays are busy days in a seaside city, and the May and August weekends bring big crowds to the seafront and the Lanes. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would cut two hours off the five 22:00 branches, so check the window card the week before. Dates in the tables below update automatically.

Easter opening times

Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Brighton branch to follow its usual pattern for that day.

Easter moves each year. Dates shown are the next Easter weekend.

May and August bank holidays

The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday, and all three are peak days on the coast. Brighton Pride usually falls on the first weekend in August, when the city centre and St James’s Street are at their busiest and some streets are closed to traffic.

All three fall on a Monday, so the dates shift each year.

Christmas and New Year opening times

The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Brighton times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.

The Christmas Day closure is a licence condition under the Gambling Act 2005. Next dates update automatically.

Each Brighton branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.

How the live opening times work

Everything live on this page reads the clock in Brighton (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.

The panel at the top

The top panel covers the four Betfred branches within a mile of the Clock Tower. It tells you how many are open right now, which is next to close, and how long until the last one shuts for the night. After the last close it switches to counting down to the first shop opening the next morning.

The shop rows

Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.

Map, directions and Street View

Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all six branches, Hove and Coldean included.

Betfred in Hove and Coldean

Two more branches sit outside the central mile: George Street in Hove, a mile and a half west, and Coldean Lane on the northern edge of the city towards Falmer. Both publish full weekly times, so their live status is as exact as the central shops’.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders every list nearest-first.

The Hove shop is one of the strongest in the estate: 08:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, 07:30 to 22:00 on a Saturday — the earliest opening of any Betfred on this site — and 08:30 to 22:00 on a Sunday. It sits in a remarkable cluster on George Street, with a Ladbrokes and a Paddy Power within about fifty yards and a Coral on Blatchington Road a couple of minutes away. Coldean Lane is the quieter of the two, running 09:00 to 21:00 and opening at 10:00 on a Sunday, and it is the closest branch to the Amex Stadium at Falmer and the University of Sussex.

Betfred near Brighton

Brighton and Hove is hemmed in by the South Downs, so the nearest branches outside the city are along the coast in either direction.

Portslade and Shoreham-by-Sea lie west beyond Hove, with Worthing further along the coast, and Lewes, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford to the east. All are listed under their own post towns rather than under Brighton. Eastbourne, about twenty miles east, has its own estate, and Crawley and Haywards Heath sit north towards Gatwick.

All six branches on this page are licensed by Brighton & Hove City Council, including the Hove shop, because the two towns have been a single authority since 1997. If you are heading for Portslade, Shoreham or Lewes rather than Brighton itself, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the six branches covered here.

Other bookmakers in Brighton

Brighton is a Ladbrokes city by shop count, with Betfred, William Hill, Coral and Paddy Power sharing the rest.

Ladbrokes has the widest spread: 1E St James’s Street, two doors from the Betfred at 124/125, plus 32 West Street, 20 Clarence Square, 112 London Road, Carden Avenue in Patcham, the Broadway on Whitehawk Road, and George Street, Church Road and Portland Road in Hove. William Hill trades at 39 Queens Road near the station, Paddy Power on North Street and at 9 George Street in Hove, and Coral has shops on Dyke Road and Blatchington Road.

We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Brighton, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Two spots are worth knowing: St James’s Street, where the Betfred and a Ladbrokes are effectively neighbours, and George Street in Hove, where four brands trade within a couple of minutes’ walk. Every bookmaker in the city is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington. Brighton is a small estate by the standards of the northern towns — six shops against Bournemouth’s ten — but it trades later than any of them. Four branches sit within a mile of the Clock Tower, on Western Road, St James’s Street, London Road and Lewes Road, following the main shopping streets rather than a ring of estates. Hove adds a fifth on George Street, and Coldean Lane covers the northern edge of the city.

For travellers, 81–82 Western Road is the closest to Brighton station and Churchill Square, with 55 London Road a similar distance to the north. St James’s Street is the one for the seafront, the Palace Pier and Kemptown, and it is open fourteen hours a day, seven days a week. On matchdays at the Amex Stadium in Falmer, Coldean Lane is the nearest of the six, with Lewes Road the obvious stop on the way out of town. Brighton racecourse, up on Whitehawk Hill, is about a mile and a half from the St James’s Street shop.

Frequently asked questions

How many Betfred shops are there in Brighton?
Five Betfred branches carry a Brighton address — Western Road, St James’s Street in Kemptown, London Road, Lewes Road and Coldean Lane — and a sixth sits on George Street in Hove. All six are licensed by Brighton & Hove City Council, and all six are on this page.
What time does Betfred open in Brighton?
Three branches open at 08:00 on weekdays: St James’s Street, London Road and Hove. Western Road opens at 08:30, and Lewes Road and Coldean Lane at 09:00. The earliest opening of the week anywhere in the city is Hove at 07:30 on a Saturday, and St James’s Street is the only branch that opens at 08:00 on a Sunday.
What time does Betfred close in Brighton?
Five of the six close at 22:00, and they hold that time every day of the week, Sunday included. Only Coldean Lane closes earlier, at 21:00. Nothing in Brighton shuts before 21:00 on any day, which makes it one of the latest-closing estates on this site.
Which Betfred in Brighton is open latest on a Sunday?
Five of the six trade until 22:00 on a Sunday. St James’s Street in Kemptown is the pick of them because it also opens earliest, at 08:00, giving it a fourteen-hour Sunday — the same hours it keeps all week. Coldean Lane is the only branch closing before 22:00, at 21:00.
Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
Are Betfred shops in Brighton open on bank holidays?
Yes, and in a seaside city they are among the busiest days of the year. Good Friday, Easter Monday and the May and August bank holidays are all trading days, usually on normal or slightly shortened hours. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later.
Which Betfred is nearest to Brighton station and the Amex Stadium?
81–82 Western Road is the closest to Brighton station and the Churchill Square end of town, and 55 London Road is a similar distance north of it. For Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium in Falmer, 64/65 Lewes Road is the nearest branch on the route out, and Coldean Lane is the closest of the six to the ground itself.
How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Brighton?
Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of the six Betfred shops in Brighton and Hove.
