Darlington’s two town-centre shops are identical twins: Tubwell Row and Northgate are two hundred yards apart and run exactly the same week, 08:00 to 21:30 on weekdays, 08:00 to 20:30 on a Saturday and 09:00 to 19:30 on a Sunday. Whinfield, out at the district centre, runs its own pattern and is the only one of the three that opens earlier on a Saturday than midweek. What stands out across all three is how much the weekend costs you: the closing time drops an hour on Saturday and another hour on Sunday, and nothing in the town reaches 22:00 on any day.

Both town-centre branches, on Tubwell Row and Northgate, ordered by distance from the Market Place. Each row shows today’s times, whether the shop is open now and how long until it closes, with buttons for the map pin, a route from where you are and Street View of the shopfront.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders the list nearest-first.

Both carry their own published weekly times, and the two sets are identical. Tubwell Row sits beside the Market Place and the indoor market, a third of a mile from Darlington station, with a William Hill on Bakehouse Hill a few doors away; Northgate runs north from the Market Place with a Ladbrokes on Skinnergate a couple of minutes off it. Distances are straight-line estimates from the Market Place. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.

Darlington Betfred opening times compared

The full weekly pattern for both branches in one table. Today’s column is highlighted.

Tubwell Row and Northgate are interchangeable on time — the same hours on all seven days — so the only thing separating them is which end of the Market Place you are on. Whinfield differs in three ways: it opens an hour later midweek, an hour earlier than its own weekday time on a Saturday, and closes ninety minutes earlier on a Sunday. After 21:00 on a weekday evening the town centre is the only option.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Darlington

Full weekly times are published for both branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.

Open earliest

Tubwell Row and Northgate both open at 08:00 Monday to Saturday, earlier than most towns of Darlington’s size manage — Castleford and Bury both wait until 08:30 or 09:00. Whinfield opens at 09:00 midweek but comes forward to 08:00 on a Saturday, so on a Saturday morning all three are open by eight. Sunday is 09:00 in the centre and 09:30 at Whinfield.

Open latest

No Darlington branch reaches 22:00 at any point in the week. The town-centre pair close at 21:30 on weekdays, 20:30 on a Saturday and 19:30 on a Sunday; Whinfield closes at 21:00, 21:00 and 18:00. That makes Darlington one of the tightest evening windows on this site, alongside Chesterfield — and on a Sunday it is tighter still, with everything shut by half past seven.

The one to remember on a Saturday: Whinfield is the latest-closing branch in the town on a Saturday evening, trading until 21:00 against the town centre’s 20:30. Every other day of the week Tubwell Row and Northgate are later.

Betfred Darlington Sunday opening times

Sunday is much the shortest day in Darlington, and the town closes early: everything is shut by 19:30.

Tubwell Row and Northgate run ten and a half hours on a Sunday, 09:00 to 19:30, and Whinfield eight and a half, 09:30 to 18:00. That 19:30 finish is the earliest Sunday close of any town centre covered on this site — earlier even than Chesterfield’s 20:00 — and a sharp contrast with Brighton, Chelmsford and Coventry, where every branch trades until 22:00 on a Sunday. If you want a shop bet on a Sunday evening in Darlington, go before half seven.

Betfred Darlington bank holiday opening times

Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so both Darlington branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.

On the other bank holidays, Darlington branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would cut ninety minutes off the town-centre pair and an hour off Whinfield. Dates in the tables below update automatically.

Easter opening times

Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect both Darlington branches to follow their usual pattern for that day.

Easter moves each year. Dates shown are the next Easter weekend.

May and August bank holidays

The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before, and the town-centre pair would lose ninety minutes if it applies.

All three fall on a Monday, so the dates shift each year.

Christmas and New Year opening times

The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Darlington times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.

The Christmas Day closure is a licence condition under the Gambling Act 2005. Next dates update automatically.

New Year’s Eve31 December—Normal opening, early close around 18:00

Each Darlington branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. Tubwell Row and Northgate sit beside the Market Place, so their festive hours tend to track the town centre’s, while Whinfield may follow the district centre’s own pattern. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.

How the live opening times work

Everything live on this page reads the clock in Darlington (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.

The panel at the top

The top panel covers the two town-centre branches, Tubwell Row and Northgate. Since they keep identical hours it reads the same for both. It tells you how many are open right now, which is next to close, and how long until the last one shuts for the night. Whinfield is in its own section below with its own live row.

The shop rows

Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.

Map, directions and Street View

Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and both lists re-order themselves, and the directions button points to whichever of the two branches is closer to you.

Betfred at Whinfield

The third Darlington branch sits in the Whinfield District Shopping Centre on Whinbush Way, about two miles north-east of the Market Place towards Haughton le Skerne. It publishes full weekly times, so its live status is as exact as the town-centre shops’.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders every list nearest-first.

    1.8 mi from the town centre · Mon–Fri 09:00–21:00 · Sat 08:00–21:00 · Sun 09:30–18:00

Whinfield runs 09:00 to 21:00 Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 21:00 on a Saturday and 09:30 to 18:00 on a Sunday. It is the only Darlington branch that opens earlier on a Saturday than midweek, and the only one still open at 20:45 on a Saturday evening. The Sunday is the shortest in the town at eight and a half hours. It serves the Whinfield, Springfield and Haughton estates on the north-east edge of town, where the nearest alternative is a Ladbrokes on Salters Lane North about a mile away.

Betfred near Darlington

Darlington sits between Teesside and south Durham, and the surrounding towns each have their own Betfred branches listed under their own names.

Newton Aycliffe is the closest, about six miles north on Sheraton Road, with Bishop Auckland’s Newgate Street branch eleven miles north-west and Ferryhill’s North Street shop a similar distance north. Stockton, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool all have their own estates to the east, and Richmond and Northallerton lie south into North Yorkshire. Some listings give the Ferryhill and Bishop Auckland shops Darlington postal addresses, which is why they occasionally appear in a “Darlington” count.

Both Darlington shops are licensed by Darlington Borough Council. The Ferryhill, Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe branches fall under County Durham rather than Darlington Borough Council, so they are separate in licensing terms even where the postal address says Darlington. If you are heading for Newton Aycliffe or Bishop Auckland rather than Darlington itself, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the three Darlington branches, which may not be the nearest Betfred overall.

Other bookmakers in Darlington

Ladbrokes is comfortably the biggest name in Darlington, with roughly twice as many shops in the borough as Betfred.

Ladbrokes has around six across the town, including Skinnergate in the centre, 74 Salisbury Terrace, 289 Yarm Road, the Neasham Road Retail Centre and Salters Lane North near Whinfield. William Hill trades at 1 Bakehouse Hill, a few doors from the Tubwell Row Betfred, and at 105 Victoria Road near the station. Coral has a shop at 18 West Auckland Road on the west side of town.

We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Darlington, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. One point is already clear though: the Market Place area has a Betfred, a William Hill and a Ladbrokes within about two hundred yards of each other, so if one is closed there is usually an alternative within a couple of minutes. Out west towards Cockerton and Branksome, and south towards Hummersknott, Betfred has no shop at all — Coral on West Auckland Road and the Ladbrokes on Salisbury Terrace cover that side of town. Every bookmaker in the town is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about 130 miles south-west. Darlington is a three-shop town with an unusual shape: two branches two hundred yards apart in the centre, on Tubwell Row and Northgate, and one out at the Whinfield district centre two miles north-east. Nothing covers the west or south of the town, where Coral and Ladbrokes trade instead. The two central shops keep identical hours, which suggests they are run as a pair rather than competing for the same trade.

For travellers, 8–10 Tubwell Row is the one to know: beside the Market Place and the indoor market, on the main bus routes, and about a third of a mile from Darlington railway station on the East Coast Main Line. Northgate is a couple of minutes further north towards the Cornmill centre. For Darlington FC at Blackwell Meadows, about a mile south of the centre, the town-centre pair are the nearest, though neither is a walk-up from the ground. Whinfield is the one for the north-east estates and the A66 side of town.

Frequently asked questions

How many Betfred shops are there in Darlington?
Three, all licensed by Darlington Borough Council: 8–10 Tubwell Row and 56–58 Northgate in the town centre, about two hundred yards apart, and the Whinfield District Shopping Centre branch on Whinbush Way, two miles north-east. All three publish full weekly times.
What time does Betfred open in Darlington?
The two town-centre shops both open at 08:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00 on a Sunday. Whinfield opens at 09:00 on weekdays but brings that forward to 08:00 on a Saturday, and opens at 09:30 on a Sunday — the latest start of the three.
What time does Betfred close in Darlington?
Tubwell Row and Northgate both close at 21:30 on weekdays, 20:30 on a Saturday and 19:30 on a Sunday. Whinfield closes at 21:00 on weekdays and Saturdays and 18:00 on a Sunday. No Darlington branch trades until 22:00 at any point in the week.
Which Betfred in Darlington is open latest on a Sunday?
Tubwell Row and Northgate, both until 19:30. Whinfield closes at 18:00. Sunday is much the shortest day in Darlington: the town-centre pair lose two hours off their weekday finish and Whinfield loses three.
Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
Are Betfred shops in Darlington open on bank holidays?
Yes. Good Friday, Easter Monday and the May and August bank holidays are all trading days, usually on normal or slightly shortened hours. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would cut ninety minutes off the town-centre pair and an hour off Whinfield. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later.
Which Betfred is nearest to Darlington station and the Arena?
8–10 Tubwell Row is the closest of the three to Darlington railway station, about a third of a mile west of it, and it sits by the Market Place and the main bus stops. For Darlington FC at Blackwell Meadows, the town-centre pair are around a mile north; Whinfield is the wrong side of town for it.
How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Darlington?
Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of the three Darlington Betfred shops.
