Derby inverts the usual pattern: the suburbs trade later than the city centre. Five of the seven branches close at 22:00 on weekdays, and the two that hold that time on a Sunday are both out of town, at Allenton and Oakwood. The Market Place shop in the middle of the city closes at 21:30 on a weekday and 20:00 on a Sunday, earlier than four of the five suburban branches. Every Derby shop opens at 09:00 on a Sunday, and five of the seven keep identical hours Monday to Saturday. Full published weekly times are available for every branch, so every countdown on this page is the shop’s own.

The 2 Betfred shops in Derby city centre

Both city-centre branches, on East Street and the Market Place, a couple of minutes apart. Each row shows today’s times, whether the shop is open now and how long until it closes, with buttons for the map pin, a route from where you are and Street View of the shopfront.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders the list nearest-first.

Both carry their own published weekly times, and they differ more than you would expect for two shops a hundred yards apart: East Street runs to 22:00 on weekdays and 21:00 on a Sunday, while the Market Place shop closes at 21:30 and 20:00. East Street is the better bet for a late bet in the centre. Distances are straight-line estimates from the Market Place. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.

Derby Betfred opening times compared

The full weekly pattern for all seven branches in one table, city-centre shops first. Today’s column is highlighted.

Five of the seven keep identical hours Monday to Saturday: East Street, Normanton, Allenton, Oakwood and Alvaston. The Market Place shop trims half an hour off its Saturday evening, and Mackworth is the odd one out in both directions, opening half an hour earlier on a Saturday and closing a full hour earlier. Sunday is tidy at the front end — all seven open at 09:00 — and the spread is all in the evening, from 19:00 at Mackworth to 22:00 at Allenton and Oakwood.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Derby

Full weekly times are published for all seven branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.

Open earliest

Three branches open at 08:00 on weekdays and hold it on a Saturday: both city-centre shops and Allenton on Osmaston Road. Three more open at 08:30, and only Mackworth waits until 09:00 — and it moves to 08:30 on a Saturday, the only branch in the city that opens earlier at the weekend. Nothing in Derby opens before 08:00 on any day.

Open latest

Five of the seven trade until 22:00 on weekdays: East Street in the centre, then Normanton, Allenton, Oakwood and Alvaston. Market Place closes at 21:30 and Mackworth at 21:00. Nothing in Derby closes at 20:00 or 20:30 on a weekday, which sets it apart from towns like Bury and Darlington where several branches do.

The longest day in the city: 817 Osmaston Road at Allenton runs 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00 to 22:00 on a Sunday — fourteen hours a day, six days a week, and thirteen on a Sunday. It is the only Derby branch with both the earliest opening and the latest closing, and it is a suburban shop rather than a city-centre one.

Betfred Derby Sunday opening times

Every Derby branch opens at 09:00 on a Sunday, so the only question is when it closes — and the answer runs across four different times, from 19:00 to 22:00.

Allenton and Oakwood are the two to head for on a Sunday evening, both open until 22:00 — and both are suburban. East Street and Normanton close at 21:00, Market Place and Alvaston at 20:00, and Mackworth at 19:00. If you are in the city centre after nine on a Sunday, nothing Betfred runs is open, which is worth knowing given how many towns on this site have a 22:00 central shop.

Betfred Derby bank holiday opening times

Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all seven Derby branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.

On the other bank holidays, Derby branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would cut two hours off the five 22:00 branches, so check the window card the week before. Dates in the tables below update automatically.

Easter opening times

Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Derby branch to follow its usual pattern for that day. The Grand National at Aintree falls in early April and is the busiest betting day of the year in the East Midlands.

Easter moves each year. Dates shown are the next Easter weekend.

May and August bank holidays

The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before, particularly at the five 22:00 branches where an early close makes the biggest difference.

All three fall on a Monday, so the dates shift each year.

Christmas and New Year opening times

The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Derby times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.

The Christmas Day closure is a licence condition under the Gambling Act 2005. Next dates update automatically.

New Year’s Eve31 December—Normal opening, early close around 18:00

Each Derby branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The Oakwood shop sits in the Danebridge Centre and may also follow the precinct’s own festive hours. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.

How the live opening times work

Everything live on this page reads the clock in Derby (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.

The panel at the top

The top panel covers the two city-centre branches on East Street and the Market Place. It tells you how many are open right now, which is next to close, and how long until the last one shuts for the night. Because Derby’s suburban shops trade later than its central ones, the panel is the more conservative guide — Allenton and Oakwood may still be open after both central shops have shut.

The shop rows

Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.

Map, directions and Street View

Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all seven Derby branches.

Betfred across the rest of Derby

The other five branches, spread from Normanton and Allenton in the south to Oakwood in the north-east and Mackworth in the west. All five publish full weekly times, so their live status is as exact as the city-centre shops’.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders every list nearest-first.

Four of these five close at 22:00 on weekdays, so in Derby the late finishes are a suburban thing rather than a city-centre one. Allenton is the pick of them, running 08:00 to 22:00 six days a week and 09:00 to 22:00 on a Sunday, with Oakwood matching it on the Sunday. Mackworth is much the shortest of the five at 09:00 to 21:00 and 09:00 to 19:00 on a Sunday, and it is the only branch in the city that opens earlier on a Saturday than midweek.

Betfred near Derby

Derby sits at the western edge of the East Midlands, and the towns around it each have their own Betfred branches listed under their own names.

Long Eaton is the closest, about eight miles east on the High Street, with Ilkeston, Heanor and Ripley to the north and Burton upon Trent eleven miles south-west. Nottingham, sixteen miles east with sixteen branches, is covered on its own page, and Chesterfield lies twenty-four miles north. Derby Racecourse closed in 1939, so the nearest tracks are Nottingham and Uttoxeter.

All seven branches on this page are licensed by Derby City Council. The Long Eaton branch carries a Nottingham postal address despite being in Derbyshire, and Burton upon Trent falls under Staffordshire, so both are separate in postal and licensing terms. If you are heading for Long Eaton or Burton rather than Derby itself, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the seven Derby branches.

Other bookmakers in Derby

Derby is a four-brand city, and Ladbrokes has the widest spread, with Betfred, William Hill and Paddy Power sharing the rest.

Ladbrokes trades at 13 East Street, a few doors from the Betfred at 22a, plus 88–92 St Peters Street, 72 Monk Street, 487 Nottingham Road at Chaddesden, 326 Normanton Road, 18 Humbleton Drive at Mackworth and 808 Osmaston Road at Allenton. William Hill has shops at 17/18 Corn Market in the centre, 59/61 St Thomas Road and 225 Normanton Road, plus 809 Osmaston Road and 9 Shardlow Road. Paddy Power is at 36 Corn Market and 280 Normanton Road, and Coral trades at 34 Victoria Street, 111 Wiltshire Road at Chaddesden and 1253 London Road at Alvaston.

We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Derby, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Two spots are worth knowing. On Osmaston Road at Allenton the Betfred at 817, a William Hill at 809 and a Ladbrokes at 808 are all within about fifty yards of each other — three brands on one parade. And on Shardlow Road in Alvaston the Betfred and a William Hill are four doors apart, with a Coral on London Road a few minutes away. Every bookmaker in the city is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about 80 miles north-west. Derby is a seven-shop city with an unusual balance: only two branches in the centre, on East Street and the Market Place, and five spread around the ring — Normanton and Allenton to the south, Alvaston to the south-east, Oakwood to the north-east and Mackworth to the west. Unusually for this site, the suburban shops trade later than the central ones, and the single longest day in the city belongs to Allenton rather than the Market Place.

For travellers, 22a East Street is the one to know: a minute from the Market Place and the Intu Derby centre, about half a mile from Derby railway station on the Birmingham to Sheffield line, and open until 22:00 on weekdays. The Market Place shop opens equally early but shuts ninety minutes sooner on a Sunday. For Derby County at Pride Park, none of the seven is a walk-up — the ground is a mile east of the station, with Alvaston the nearest branch at around a mile and a half. Derby Arena, the velodrome at Pride Park, is the same distance.

Frequently asked questions

How many Betfred shops are there in Derby?
Seven, all licensed by Derby City Council: East Street and Market Place in the city centre, then St Thomas Road at Normanton, Prince Charles Avenue at Mackworth, Osmaston Road at Allenton, the Danebridge Centre at Oakwood and Shardlow Road at Alvaston. All seven publish full weekly times.
What time does Betfred open in Derby?
Three branches open at 08:00 on weekdays — both city-centre shops and Allenton — with three more at 08:30 and only Mackworth at 09:00. Every Derby branch opens at 09:00 on a Sunday, which is unusually consistent, and Mackworth is the only one that opens earlier on a Saturday than midweek.
What time does Betfred close in Derby?
Five of the seven close at 22:00 on weekdays: East Street, Normanton, Allenton, Oakwood and Alvaston. Market Place closes at 21:30 and Mackworth at 21:00. Derby is one of the stronger late-evening estates covered on this site.
Which Betfred in Derby is open latest on a Sunday?
Allenton on Osmaston Road and Oakwood at the Danebridge Centre, both 09:00 to 22:00. East Street and Normanton close at 21:00, Market Place and Alvaston at 20:00, and Mackworth at 19:00 — so the suburbs beat the city centre on a Sunday evening here.
Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
Are Betfred shops in Derby open on bank holidays?
Yes. Good Friday, Easter Monday and the May and August bank holidays are all trading days, usually on normal or slightly shortened hours. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would cut two hours off the five 22:00 branches. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later.
Which Betfred is nearest to Derby station and Pride Park?
22a East Street is the closest of the seven to Derby railway station, about half a mile west of it, and it is a minute from the Market Place and the Intu Derby centre. For Derby County at Pride Park, none of the seven is close — the ground is a mile east of the station, and the Alvaston branch on Shardlow Road is the nearest at roughly a mile and a half.
How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Derby?
Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of the seven Derby Betfred shops.
