Dundee has two Betfred shops and they swap places on a Sunday. Murraygate in the city centre is the stronger branch six days a week, opening at 08:30 and running to 22:00, with an 08:00 start on a Saturday. But it drops to 21:00 on a Sunday, while Lochee holds the same 21:30 close it keeps all week — so on a Sunday evening the Lochee shop is the later of the two. Both open at 09:30 on a Sunday, later than most towns covered here. Scotland’s bank holiday calendar also differs from England’s, and the section below uses the Scottish dates.

Murraygate carries its own published weekly times: 08:30 to 22:00 Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 22:00 on a Saturday and 09:30 to 21:00 on a Sunday. It sits a few doors from the William Hill on Seagate, with a Coral on Reform Street and a Ladbrokes on Union Street both within a few minutes’ walk. Distances are straight-line estimates from City Square. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.

Dundee Betfred opening times compared

The full weekly pattern for both branches in one table. Today’s column is highlighted.

The interesting column is Sunday. Murraygate is half an hour earlier open and a full hour later closed than Lochee on a weekday, and an hour later on a Saturday evening. Come Sunday that reverses: both open at 09:30, but Murraygate shuts at 21:00 while Lochee keeps the 21:30 it holds all week. Lochee is the more predictable of the two — the same closing time every day of the year — while Murraygate is the longer-trading one on six days out of seven.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Dundee

Full weekly times are published for both branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.

Open earliest

Murraygate opens at 08:30 on weekdays and brings that forward to 08:00 on a Saturday, the earliest opening of the week in the city. Lochee opens at 09:00 midweek and 08:30 on a Saturday, so both shops open earlier at the weekend than during it. On a Sunday both wait until 09:30, which is later than the 09:00 that most towns on this site manage and later than Coventry’s 07:30 weekday start by two hours.

Open latest

Murraygate closes at 22:00 Monday to Saturday, the latest in the city, but pulls back to 21:00 on a Sunday. Lochee closes at 21:30 on all seven days. So between Monday and Saturday the city centre is the place to be after half nine, and on a Sunday it is the other way round: Lochee is the only Betfred in Dundee open after nine.

The Sunday switch: six days a week Murraygate is the longer-opening shop, but on a Sunday evening Lochee is the only Betfred in Dundee still open after 21:00. Worth knowing before a Sunday trip into the city centre.

Betfred Dundee Sunday opening times

Sunday is the one day the two shops change places: both open at 09:30, but Lochee stays open half an hour longer than the city centre.

Lochee (High Street)107 High Street, DD2 3BX09:3021:30
Murraygate (city centre)35–39 Murraygate, DD1 2EE09:3021:00

Lochee runs twelve hours on a Sunday, 09:30 to 21:30, and Murraygate eleven and a half, 09:30 to 21:00. Neither is generous by the standards of Brighton or Chelmsford, where every branch trades until 22:00 on a Sunday, but both cover the afternoon and evening football. The 09:30 start is the thing to watch: for an early Sunday bet Dundee is one of the later cities to get going.

Betfred Dundee bank holiday opening times

Betting shops in Scotland can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so both Dundee branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.

On the other bank holidays, Dundee branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred’s own shop notices for Scotland have stated that all shops close at 20:00 on bank holiday Mondays, which would take two hours off Murraygate and ninety minutes off Lochee. Dates in the tables below are calculated on the Scottish calendar, not the English one.

Easter opening times

Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Good Friday is a bank holiday in Scotland; Easter Monday is not, which is the main difference from the English pages on this site. Across the Easter weekend, expect both Dundee branches to follow their usual pattern for that day.

Easter moves each year. Dates shown are the next Easter weekend.

Scottish bank holidays

Scotland’s bank holiday calendar is not the same as England’s, and two differences matter in Dundee. Easter Monday is not a Scottish bank holiday, so shops trade a normal Monday. And the summer bank holiday falls on the first Monday in August rather than the last. 2 January is a bank holiday in Scotland, and St Andrew’s Day on 30 November is a voluntary one that most retailers, including betting shops, treat as a normal trading day.

Easter Monday is not a bank holiday in Scotland. Both Dundee branches trade normal Monday hours, so Murraygate runs 08:30 to 22:00 and Lochee 09:00 to 21:30 — unlike the English towns covered on this site, where a 20:00 bank holiday close is likely that day. Dundee also has its own trades fortnight in late July, when many local businesses shut but the betting shops stay open.

Christmas and New Year opening times

Hogmanay and New Year matter more in Scotland than anywhere else on this site, and 2 January is a bank holiday here as well as 1 January. The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Dundee times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.

The Christmas Day closure is a licence condition under the Gambling Act 2005. Next dates update automatically.

Each Dundee branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. Hogmanay is the big night in Dundee and both shops normally close early on 31 December, with a later start on 1 and 2 January. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.

How the live opening times work

Everything live on this page reads the clock in Dundee (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.

The panel at the top

The top panel covers the town-centre branch on the High Street. It tells you whether it is open right now and how long until it closes. After the last close it switches to counting down to opening the next morning.

The shop rows

Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.

Map, directions and Street View

Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and both lists re-order themselves, and the directions button points to whichever of the two branches is closer to you.

Betfred in Lochee

The second Dundee branch sits at 107 High Street in Lochee, about a mile and a half north-west of the city centre. It publishes full weekly times, so its live status is as exact as the Murraygate shop’s.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders every list nearest-first.

  • Betfred, Lochee (High Street)107 High Street, Lochee, Dundee DD2 3BX

    1.6 mi from the town centre · Mon–Fri 09:00–21:30 · Sat 08:30–21:30 · Sun 09:30–21:30

Lochee runs 09:00 to 21:30 Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 21:30 on a Saturday and 09:30 to 21:30 on a Sunday — the same closing time every day of the week, which no other branch on this site manages at 21:30. That makes it the later of the two Dundee shops on a Sunday evening. Lochee High Street is a tight cluster for bookmakers: a Ladbrokes sits at 122 High Street and a William Hill at 140, both within fifty yards of the Betfred at 107, with another William Hill on Buttar’s Loan a mile away. It is the closer of the two branches to Charleston, Menzieshill and the Kingsway West.

Betfred near Dundee

Dundee sits on the north bank of the Tay between Perth and Aberdeen, and the nearest Betfred branches outside the city are a fair distance away.

Betfred’s Scottish estate is much thinner than its English one, so there is no ring of neighbouring-town branches here of the kind you find around Bolton or Doncaster. Perth is about twenty-two miles west, Arbroath seventeen miles north-east along the coast, and St Andrews twelve miles south across the Tay Bridge in Fife. Broughty Ferry, Monifieth and Carnoustie, all within the Dundee travel-to-work area, are covered by Ladbrokes and William Hill rather than Betfred.

Both Dundee shops are licensed by Dundee City Council. A third address, 96 Fintry Road, appears in one directory listing with weekday hours of 08:30 to 21:00, but it does not appear in the branch-level source we use and the postcode given for it belongs to the Murraygate shop, so we have left it out rather than publish a row we cannot stand behind. If you know whether that shop is trading, let us know and we will add it.

Other bookmakers in Dundee

Dundee is a Ladbrokes city by a wide margin, and Betfred has the smallest presence of the four big brands.

Ladbrokes has at least eight shops across the city, including 21/25 Union Street in the centre, 130 Albert Street, 9 and 144 and 455 Strathmartine Road, 100–102 Fintry Road, the Happyhillock Road shopping centre and 122 High Street in Lochee. William Hill trades at 34 Seagate, a few doors from the Murraygate Betfred, plus 140 High Street and Buttar’s Loan in Lochee and 502 Strathmartine Road. Coral has shops at 32 Reform Street in the centre and on Macalpine Road.

We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Dundee, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Two spots are worth knowing. The Murraygate and Seagate corner has a Betfred and a William Hill within a few doors, with a Coral on Reform Street and a Ladbrokes on Union Street a couple of minutes away. And Lochee High Street has all three of Betfred, Ladbrokes and William Hill inside fifty yards. Every bookmaker in the city is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about 290 miles south. Betfred’s Scottish estate is far lighter than its English one, and Dundee shows it: two shops for a city of 148,000, against seven in Derby and sixteen in Nottingham, both smaller or comparable in size. One sits on the Murraygate in the middle of the city, the other on Lochee High Street, the old burgh centre a mile and a half north-west. Nothing covers the east of the city at Fintry, Whitfield or Broughty Ferry, where Ladbrokes and William Hill trade instead.

For travellers, 35–39 Murraygate is the one to know: on the pedestrianised run a few minutes from the Overgate centre, the V&A Dundee on the waterfront and Dundee railway station, and open until 22:00 six days a week. For football, Dens Park and Tannadice sit a couple of hundred yards apart about three quarters of a mile north-east of the Murraygate, so the city-centre shop is the matchday option for both Dundee FC and Dundee United. The Lochee branch is the one to remember on a Sunday evening, when it trades half an hour later than the centre.

Frequently asked questions

How many Betfred shops are there in Dundee?
Two: 35–39 Murraygate in the city centre and 107 High Street in Lochee, about a mile and a half north-west. Both are licensed by Dundee City Council and both publish full weekly times. A third address, 96 Fintry Road, appears in one directory but not in the branch-level source we use, and the postcode given for it is wrong, so we have left it out until it can be confirmed.
What time does Betfred open in Dundee?
Murraygate opens at 08:30 Monday to Friday and 08:00 on a Saturday. Lochee opens at 09:00 midweek and 08:30 on a Saturday. Both open at 09:30 on a Sunday, which is later than most towns covered on this site.
What time does Betfred close in Dundee?
Murraygate closes at 22:00 Monday to Saturday and 21:00 on a Sunday. Lochee closes at 21:30 every day of the week, so on a Sunday evening Lochee is open half an hour later than the city-centre shop.
Which Betfred in Dundee is open latest on a Sunday?
Lochee, at 21:30 — half an hour later than Murraygate. It is the only day of the week when the Lochee branch outlasts the city-centre one, because Lochee holds the same 21:30 close on all seven days while Murraygate drops from 22:00 to 21:00.
Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
Are Betfred shops in Dundee open on Scottish bank holidays?
Yes, and the Scottish calendar differs from the English one in ways that matter here. Easter Monday is not a bank holiday in Scotland, 2 January is, and the summer bank holiday falls on the first Monday in August rather than the last. Betfred’s own shop notices for Scotland have stated that all shops close at 20:00 on bank holiday Mondays, so expect two hours off Murraygate and ninety minutes off Lochee.
Which Betfred is nearest to Dundee station and Dens Park?
35–39 Murraygate is the closest to Dundee railway station, the V&A and the Overgate centre, about half a mile from each. For Dundee United at Tannadice and Dundee FC at Dens Park — the two grounds are a couple of hundred yards apart — Murraygate is again the nearer of the two branches, at roughly three quarters of a mile.
How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Dundee?
Tap “Use my current location”. Both lists on this page then re-order nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closer of the two Dundee Betfred shops.
