Gateshead is an early-closing borough with one striking exception. Only Brinkburn Avenue at Bensham reaches 22:00 on a weekday; the other five are shut by nine, and on a Sunday four of the six close at 19:00 or earlier. The exception is Leam Lane, one of only a handful of Betfreds on this site — alongside Elder Gate in Milton Keynes and two Northampton shops — that trade later on a Sunday than midweek, closing at 21:30 against a weekday 21:00. West Street in the town centre and Low Fell are the earliest to shut on a Sunday, at 18:00. Full published weekly times are available for every branch, so every countdown on this page is the shop’s own.
The 2 Betfred shops in central Gateshead
Both branches within a mile of the town centre: West Street by the Interchange and Brinkburn Avenue at Bensham. Each row shows today’s times, whether the shop is open now and how long until it closes, with buttons for the map pin, a route from where you are and Street View of the shopfront.

-
Betfred, Bensham (Brinkburn Avenue)14 Brinkburn Avenue, Bensham, Gateshead NE8 4JT
These two could hardly be more different. West Street, in the middle of the town by Trinity Square and the Interchange, is the shortest-trading branch in the borough: 08:30 to 21:00 on weekdays and 09:30 to 18:00 on a Sunday. Brinkburn Avenue at Bensham, three quarters of a mile south, is the longest: 09:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and 08:30 to 22:00 on a Saturday. For an evening bet in Gateshead the town centre is the wrong place to be. Distances are straight-line estimates from West Street. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.
Gateshead Betfred opening times compared
The full weekly pattern for all six branches in one table, central shops first. Today’s column is highlighted.
Low Fell, Wrekenton and Leam Lane keep identical hours Monday to Saturday. West Street and Dunston open earlier on a Saturday, at 08:00, but both also close earlier that evening, so the Saturday is not necessarily longer. Sunday is where the borough spreads out furthest: opening times run from 09:00 to 10:00 and closing times from 18:00 to 21:30, a three-and-a-half-hour gap between the earliest and latest shutters.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Gateshead
Full weekly times are published for all six branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.
Open earliest
Low Fell is the only Gateshead branch to open at 08:00 on a weekday; West Street, Wrekenton and Leam Lane open at 08:30, and Bensham and Dunston at 09:00. Saturday is earlier: West Street and Dunston join Low Fell at 08:00. On a Sunday, Leam Lane is first at 09:00 and Bensham last at 10:00.
Open latest
Bensham is the only Gateshead branch that reaches 22:00, on weekdays and Saturdays alike. West Street, Dunston, Wrekenton and Leam Lane close at 21:00, and Low Fell at 20:00. After nine in the evening the Brinkburn Avenue shop is the only Betfred open in the borough.
The one that breaks the rule: Fewster Square at Leam Lane runs 08:30 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday but 09:00 to 21:30 on a Sunday — half an hour later on the day almost every other shop in the country trims its hours. Only a handful of branches across the towns covered on this site do this; the others are Elder Gate in Milton Keynes and Kettering Road and Broadway East in Northampton.
Betfred Gateshead Sunday opening times
Sunday is the most scattered day in Gateshead: four different opening times and four different closes, spanning three and a half hours.
| Shop | Opens | Closes | Find the shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leam Lane (Fewster Square)Unit 9, Fewster Square, NE10 8QX | 09:00 | 21:30 | |
| Bensham (Brinkburn Avenue)14 Brinkburn Avenue, NE8 4JT | 10:00 | 20:30 | |
| Dunston (The Crescent)10/11 The Crescent, NE11 9SW | 09:30 | 19:00 | |
| Wrekenton (High Street)157 High Street, NE9 7JR | 09:30 | 19:00 | |
| West Street (town centre)Unit 2, West Street, NE8 1ED | 09:30 | 18:00 | |
| Low Fell (Durham Road)540 Durham Road, NE9 6HX | 09:30 | 18:00 |
Leam Lane is the one to head for on a Sunday evening, open until 21:30 — later than it trades midweek. Bensham follows at 20:30, then Dunston and Wrekenton at 19:00. West Street and Low Fell both shut at 18:00, so if you are in Gateshead town centre on a Sunday evening the nearest open Betfred is a bus ride away at Leam Lane or Bensham, or across the Tyne in Newcastle.
Betfred Gateshead bank holiday opening times
Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all six Gateshead branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.
On the other bank holidays, Gateshead branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would cut two hours off Bensham and an hour or so off the rest, so check the window card the week before. Dates in the tables below update automatically.
Easter opening times
Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Gateshead branch to follow its usual pattern for that day. The Grand National at Aintree falls in early April and is the busiest betting day of the year in the North East, and Newcastle racecourse at High Gosforth Park is about six miles north.
| Day | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal weekday times |
| Easter Saturday | Saturday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal Saturday times |
| Easter Sunday | First Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March | — | Normal Sunday times |
| Easter Monday | Day after Easter Sunday | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
May and August bank holidays
The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before, particularly at Bensham, where a 20:00 close would cut two hours off the borough’s only 22:00 shop. The Northumberland Plate meeting at Newcastle, six miles north, falls in late June.
| Bank holiday | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May bank holiday | First Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Spring bank holiday | Last Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Summer bank holiday | Last Monday in August | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
Christmas and New Year opening times
The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Gateshead times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.
| Day | Date | Next date | Usual pattern in Gateshead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | 24 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | — | Closed all day, every shop |
| Boxing Day | 26 December | — | Normal opening, close around 20:00 |
| Substitute bank holiday | When 25 or 26 December falls on a weekend | — | Normal times for that day |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January | — | Later start around 10:00, close around 20:00 |
Each Gateshead branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The West Street shop sits beside Trinity Square and may also follow the centre’s own festive hours. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.
How the live opening times work
Everything live on this page reads the clock in Gateshead (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.
The panel at the top
The top panel covers the two branches within a mile of the town centre, West Street and Brinkburn Avenue. It tells you how many are open right now, which is next to close, and how long until the last one shuts for the night. Bensham is the borough’s latest-closing shop on weekdays, so on those days the panel is a fair guide to the whole borough — but on a Sunday evening Leam Lane outlasts both, and it is in the section below.
The shop rows
Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.
Map, directions and Street View
Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all six Gateshead branches.
Betfred across the rest of Gateshead
The other four branches, spread from Low Fell and Wrekenton along the Durham Road ridge to Dunston in the west and Leam Lane in the east. All four publish full weekly times, so their live status is as exact as the central shops’.

None of these four reaches 22:00, but Leam Lane is the one to remember: 08:30 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00 to 21:30 on a Sunday, one of only a handful of Sunday extensions on this site. Low Fell is the early starter, opening at 08:00 six days a week, but also the earliest to close: 20:00 Monday to Saturday and 18:00 on a Sunday. Dunston opens at 08:00 on a Saturday but shuts at 20:30 that evening, and Wrekenton keeps a flat 08:30 to 21:00 six days a week.
Betfred near Gateshead
Gateshead faces Newcastle across the Tyne, and the branches on the other side of the river are listed under Newcastle upon Tyne rather than Gateshead.
Newcastle city centre is a mile north across the High Level and Tyne bridges, with Betfred branches on Nun Street, at the Haymarket Metro station and on West Road, all within about a mile and a quarter of the West Street shop. Birtley, Washington, Hebburn and Jarrow lie south and east, each with its own branch, and Whickham, Blaydon and Felling sit inside Gateshead borough but under their own or Newcastle postal addresses. Newcastle racecourse at High Gosforth Park is about six miles north.
All six branches on this page are licensed by Gateshead Council, but four of them carry a Newcastle upon Tyne postal address, which is why directory searches for “Betfred Gateshead” and “Betfred Newcastle” both return a muddled list. The Newcastle branches proper — Nun Street, Haymarket and West Road — fall under Newcastle City Council. If you are heading across the river rather than staying in Gateshead, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the six Gateshead branches.
Other bookmakers in Gateshead
Gateshead is a Ladbrokes borough by shop count, with Betfred second and Coral and William Hill splitting the rest.
Ladbrokes trades in the Trinity Centre about fifty yards from the West Street Betfred, plus 89 Coatsworth Road at Bensham, 97–101 Saltwell Road, 324–326 Old Durham Road at Deckham and 3 Wrekenton Row, which is a few doors from the Betfred on Wrekenton High Street. Coral has shops at 526 Durham Road in Low Fell — almost next door to the Betfred at 540 — and 56 Beacon Lough Road. William Hill trades at 124 Saltwell Road and 31 Sheriffs Highway in Low Fell.
We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Gateshead, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Two pairs are worth knowing: Durham Road in Low Fell, where the Betfred at 540 and a Coral at 526 are a few doors apart, and Wrekenton, where the Betfred at 157 High Street and a Ladbrokes on Wrekenton Row are about fifty yards apart. Given how early the Gateshead Betfred shops close on a Sunday, a rival may well be the later option that evening, which is worth checking rather than assuming. Every bookmaker in the borough is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about 130 miles south. Gateshead is a six-shop borough and a genuinely suburban estate: one shop in the town centre on West Street, and five spread along the ridges and estates south and west of it at Bensham, Low Fell, Dunston, Wrekenton and Leam Lane. Four of the six carry a Newcastle upon Tyne postal address despite being licensed by Gateshead Council, which is worth knowing if you are searching by town rather than postcode.
For travellers, Unit 2 West Street is the one to know by location rather than hours: it is a couple of minutes from the Gateshead Interchange, Trinity Square and the Gateshead Metro station, and about half a mile from the Sage, the Baltic and the quayside bridges into Newcastle. Just be aware it is the shortest-trading branch in the borough and shuts at 18:00 on a Sunday. For a late bet, Brinkburn Avenue at Bensham is the one on weekdays and Leam Lane on a Sunday. Gateshead International Stadium is about half a mile east of West Street.
Frequently asked questions
- How many Betfred shops are there in Gateshead?
- Six, all licensed by Gateshead Council: West Street in the town centre and Brinkburn Avenue at Bensham, plus Durham Road at Low Fell, The Crescent at Dunston, High Street at Wrekenton and Fewster Square at Leam Lane. All six publish full weekly times. Several carry a Newcastle upon Tyne postal address despite being in Gateshead borough.
- What time does Betfred open in Gateshead?
- Low Fell opens first, at 08:00 on weekdays; West Street, Wrekenton and Leam Lane open at 08:30, and Bensham and Dunston at 09:00. On a Saturday, West Street and Dunston join Low Fell at 08:00. Sunday starts at 09:00 at Leam Lane, 09:30 at four branches and 10:00 at Bensham.
- What time does Betfred close in Gateshead?
- Only Brinkburn Avenue at Bensham reaches 22:00, and it holds that on a Saturday too. West Street, Dunston, Wrekenton and Leam Lane close at 21:00 on weekdays, and Low Fell at 20:00. Gateshead is a comparatively early-closing borough: five of the six shops are shut by nine.
- Which Betfred in Gateshead is open latest on a Sunday?
- Fewster Square at Leam Lane, at 21:30. It is the only branch in the borough that trades later on a Sunday than it does midweek, and the only one open past 20:30 on a Sunday evening. Bensham is next at 20:30, then Dunston and Wrekenton at 19:00, with West Street and Low Fell closing at 18:00.
- Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
- No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
- Are Betfred shops in Gateshead open on bank holidays?
- Yes. Good Friday, Easter Monday and the May and August bank holidays are all trading days, usually on normal or slightly shortened hours. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which in Gateshead would only shorten Bensham, Low Fell and the four 21:00 shops by an hour or two. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later.
- Which Betfred is nearest to the Gateshead Interchange and the Stadium?
- Unit 2 West Street is the closest to the Interchange, the Trinity Square centre and the Gateshead Metro station, a couple of minutes from each. It is also the nearest of the six to Gateshead International Stadium and to the Sage, the Baltic and the quayside bridges into Newcastle, all about half a mile north.
- How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Gateshead?
- Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of the six Gateshead Betfred shops.
