The pattern repeats across the city: the West End shops on West Road and at the Adelaide Centre, and Shields Road in Byker, trade until 22:00 on weekdays, while the northern shops in Gosforth, Lemington and Forest Hall close at 20:30. Full published weekly times are available for every branch, and the licensing register matches current listings for all ten city shops.

These three are within a quarter of a mile of each other but keep very different evenings. Nun Street is the late shop, open until 22:00 all week; Haymarket closes at 21:30 on weekdays and 20:30 on a Sunday; Grainger Street shuts at 20:30 on weekdays and 18:00 on a Sunday. All three open at 08:00 Monday to Saturday. Nun Street has a Jennings next door at number 5, and Clayton Street has a Paddy Power and a Ladbrokes a minute away. Distances are straight-line estimates from Grey’s Monument. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.
Newcastle Betfred opening times compared
The full weekly pattern for all eleven branches in one table, city-centre shops first. Today’s column is highlighted.
Newcastle’s shops fall into three groups. Four trade until 22:00 on weekdays — Nun Street, West Road, Shields Road and the Adelaide Centre. Haymarket, Walker and Heaton finish between 21:00 and 21:30. And four close at 20:30: Grainger Street, Gosforth, Lemington and Forest Hall. Only Nun Street and West Road keep 22:00 on a Sunday too, and Heaton is the only branch with the same hours on a Saturday as on weekdays apart from those two.

Betfred Newcastle bank holiday opening times
Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all eleven Newcastle branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.
On the other bank holidays, Newcastle branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would take two hours off the four 22:00 shops and half an hour off the 20:30 shops. Dates in the tables below update automatically.
Easter opening times
Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Newcastle branch to follow its usual pattern for that day.
| Day | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal weekday times |
| Easter Saturday | Saturday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal Saturday times |
| Easter Sunday | First Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March | — | Normal Sunday times |
| Easter Monday | Day after Easter Sunday | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
May and August bank holidays
The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before; a 20:00 bank holiday close would take up to two hours off the Newcastle branches.
| Bank holiday | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May bank holiday | First Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Spring bank holiday | Last Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Summer bank holiday | Last Monday in August | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
Christmas and New Year opening times
The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Newcastle times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.
| Day | Date | Next date | Usual pattern in Newcastle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | 24 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | — | Closed all day, every shop |
| Boxing Day | 26 December | — | Normal opening, close around 20:00 |
| Substitute bank holiday | When 25 or 26 December falls on a weekend | — | Normal times for that day |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January | — | Later start around 10:00, close around 20:00 |
Each Newcastle branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.
How the live opening times work
Everything live on this page reads the clock in Newcastle (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.
The panel at the top
The top panel covers the three city-centre branches on Grainger Street, Nun Street and at Haymarket. It tells you how many are open right now, which is next to close, and how long until the last one shuts for the night — usually Nun Street, at 22:00.
The shop rows
Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.
Map, directions and Street View
Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all eleven Newcastle branches.
Betfred across the rest of Newcastle
Eight more branches serve the neighbourhoods: Arthur’s Hill, Benwell and Lemington in the West End; Byker, Heaton and Walker in the East End; and Gosforth and Forest Hall to the north. All eight publish full weekly times.

Shields Road in Byker also reaches 22:00 on weekdays. The northern shops keep shorter hours: Gosforth and Forest Hall close at 20:30 on weekdays and 18:00 on a Sunday. Forest Hall carries a Newcastle address but sits in North Tyneside and is licensed by North Tyneside Council.
Betfred near Newcastle
Newcastle sits on the north bank of the Tyne, and directory sites fold several neighbouring towns into its Betfred count.
Directories list sixteen “Newcastle” Betfreds, but five are elsewhere: West Street, Low Fell and Dunston are in Gateshead and covered on our Gateshead page; 98–102 High Street East is in Wallsend; and 3 Lane Head is in Ryton. The licensing register also carries a Betfred at the Killingworth Centre (North Tyneside), which does not appear in current listings. And if you were looking for Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, its Betfred is at 5–6 Ironmarket, about 150 miles south.
Ten of the eleven branches are licensed by Newcastle City Council; Forest Hall falls under North Tyneside Council. If you are heading for Gateshead, Wallsend or Whitley Bay rather than Newcastle itself, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the eleven Newcastle branches.
Other bookmakers in Newcastle
Newcastle is a Ladbrokes city by shop count, with eighteen branches to Betfred’s eleven.
Ladbrokes has eighteen shops in Newcastle, including Clayton Street, Nelson Street, Percy Street and Pilgrim Street in the centre, Shields Road in Byker and the Benwell Shopping Centre next to the Adelaide Centre Betfred. William Hill has eight, among them West Road, Shields Road, Chillingham Road and Stanhope Street; Coral four, including Northumberland Street; and Paddy Power and Jennings one each, on Clayton Street and Nun Street.
We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Newcastle, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Several Betfreds sit a few doors from a rival: Nun Street next to a Jennings, Shields Road beside a William Hill and a Ladbrokes, Chillingham Road opposite a William Hill, and the Adelaide Centre next to a Ladbrokes. Every bookmaker in the city is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about 120 miles south-west. Newcastle has eleven branches — three in the city centre and eight across the West End, East End and the northern suburbs — and the licensing register and current listings agree on every one of the ten city shops.
For visitors, Nun Street is the one to know: a couple of minutes from the Grainger Market and Eldon Square, a quarter of a mile from St James’ Park and open until 22:00 every day. Grainger Street is the nearest to Newcastle Central station but closes earlier, and the Haymarket shop is inside the Metro station for anyone travelling on the Metro.

- What time does Betfred open in Newcastle?
- All three city-centre shops, plus Shields Road in Byker and West Road in Arthur’s Hill, open at 08:00 on weekdays. Benwell, Heaton and Walker open at 08:30, and Gosforth, Lemington and Forest Hall at 09:00. Sunday openings run from 09:00 to 10:00.

- Are Betfred shops in Newcastle open on bank holidays?
- Yes. Good Friday, Easter Monday and the May and August bank holidays are all trading days, usually on normal or slightly shortened hours. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would take up to two hours off the Newcastle branches. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later.
- Which Betfred is nearest to St James’ Park and Newcastle Central station?
- 7–11 Nun Street is about a quarter of a mile from St James’ Park and open until 22:00 every day, which makes it the natural choice around a Newcastle United match. For Newcastle Central station, Grainger Street is the nearest, a few minutes’ walk north up Grainger Street itself.
- How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Newcastle?
- Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of the eleven Newcastle Betfred shops.
