Newmarket, the headquarters of British flat racing, has one Betfred: 69–73 High Street, open 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00 to 22:00 on a Sunday. That puts it among the longer-trading shops on this site, with a 22:00 close every day of the week. Newmarket is not covered by the directory we use for most towns, so these times come from two business listings. They agree on everything except the Sunday opening, where we show the later of the two, 09:00. The licensing register also carries a second shop on Valley Way that no longer appears in current listings.
Betfred on the High Street
Newmarket’s Betfred, at 69–73 High Street. The row shows today’s times, whether the shop is open now and how long until it closes, with buttons for the map pin, a route from where you are and Street View of the shopfront.

Betfred, High Street69–73 High Street, Newmarket CB8 8NA
The High Street shop runs 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00 to 22:00 on a Sunday. It sits in the middle of the town’s main street, with a Paddy Power across the road at 96 High Street and Ladbrokes and William Hill shops in The Rookery shopping centre a minute away. Distances are straight-line estimates from the Jubilee Clock Tower. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.
Newmarket Betfred opening times compared
The full weekly pattern for the shop in one table. Today’s column is highlighted.
With one shop the table is short and the pattern simple: the same fourteen-hour day, 08:00 to 22:00, from Monday to Saturday, and a thirteen-hour Sunday that starts an hour later and closes at the same time. There is no early-closing day in the week.
| Shop | Mon – Fri | Saturday | Sunday | Find the shop |

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Newmarket
Full weekly times are published for the shop, so this section covers every day of its week.
Open earliest
08:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00 on a Sunday. One of the two listings we checked gives the Sunday opening as 08:30; we show 09:00 so that the live status never says open when the shop may still be shut. If you need an early Sunday start, it is worth checking the window card.
Open latest
22:00 every day of the week, Sunday included. Both listings agree on the closing time.
Worth knowing: the High Street shop closes at 22:00 on every day of the week, so after an evening meeting on the July Course in summer there is still time to get back into town.
Betfred Newmarket Sunday opening times
Sunday on the High Street runs 09:00 to 22:00.
| Shop | Opens | Closes | Find the shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Street69–73 High Street, CB8 8NA | 09:00 | 22:00 |
Thirteen hours on a Sunday covers the morning racing, the afternoon football and the evening kick-offs. The only difference from the rest of the week is the later start.
Betfred Newmarket bank holiday opening times
Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so the Newmarket shop closes on 25 December by law rather than by choice.
On the other bank holidays, the Newmarket shop usually runs either its normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would take two hours off the High Street shop. Dates in the tables below update automatically.
Easter opening times
Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect the Newmarket shop to follow its usual pattern for that day.
| Day | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal weekday times |
| Easter Saturday | Saturday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal Saturday times |
| Easter Sunday | First Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March | — | Normal Sunday times |
| Easter Monday | Day after Easter Sunday | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
May and August bank holidays
The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before, and the shop would lose two hours if it applies.
| Bank holiday | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May bank holiday | First Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Spring bank holiday | Last Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Summer bank holiday | Last Monday in August | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
Christmas and New Year opening times
The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Newmarket times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.
| Day | Date | Next date | Usual pattern in Newmarket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | 24 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | — | Closed all day, both shops |
| Boxing Day | 26 December | — | Normal opening, close around 20:00 |
| Substitute bank holiday | When 25 or 26 December falls on a weekend | — | Normal times for that day |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January | — | Later start around 10:00, close around 20:00 |
Each Newmarket branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The shop sits in the town centre, so its festive hours tend to track the trading pattern of the shops around the Market Place. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.
How the live opening times work
Everything live on this page reads the clock in Newmarket (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.
The panel at the top
The top panel covers the 69–73 High Street branch, the only Betfred in Newmarket. It tells you whether it is open right now and how long until it closes, and after closing it counts down to the next morning’s opening.
The shop rows
Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.
Map, directions and Street View
Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the page measures your distance to the shop, and the directions button plans a route from wherever you are.
Betfred near Newmarket
Newmarket sits on the Suffolk–Cambridgeshire border, and the nearest Betfred branches outside it are nine miles or more away.
The licensing register lists a second Newmarket Betfred at 80 Valley Way (CB8 0QL), on the western side of the town. It does not appear in the current business directories we checked, which list the High Street shop as the only Newmarket Betfred, so we have not given it a live row — if you know it is trading, let us know. Beyond the town, the nearest Betfreds are at 22 Market Place in Mildenhall, about nine miles north-east, 16 High Street in Haverhill, about eleven miles south, and 49–51 High Street in Cambridge, about thirteen miles west.
The High Street shop is licensed by West Suffolk Council, which also covers Mildenhall and Haverhill. If you are heading for Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds or Ely rather than Newmarket itself, use the location button above to see how far the High Street shop is from you.
Other bookmakers in Newmarket
Newmarket has five betting shops across four brands, and Betfred has just one of them.
Ladbrokes has two shops in Newmarket, at 7 The Rookery and 6–8 High Street. Paddy Power trades at 96 High Street, opposite the Betfred, and William Hill at 14 The Rookery. For a town of 20,000 that is a well-supplied high street, which is what you would expect in the home of British racing.
We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Newmarket, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. The Betfred, the Paddy Power and the two shops in The Rookery are all within a couple of minutes’ walk of each other, so it is easy to compare prices on a race day. Every bookmaker in the town is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about 160 miles north-west. Newmarket has a single Betfred on the High Street, where the register once also carried a shop on Valley Way. It is a small estate in a town where racing is the main industry: the two racecourses, the training yards on the Heath and the Tattersalls bloodstock sales all sit within a couple of miles of the shop.
For visitors, the High Street shop is a short walk from the National Horseracing Museum and Palace House, about half a mile from Newmarket railway station, and about a mile and a half from the Rowley Mile. On a race day the High Street is busy, and the 22:00 close gives time to call in after racing.
Frequently asked questions
- How many Betfred shops are there in Newmarket?
- One: 69–73 High Street in the town centre, licensed by West Suffolk Council. The licensing register also lists a Betfred at 80 Valley Way, but it no longer appears in current business directories, so we have not counted it.
- What time does Betfred open in Newmarket?
- 08:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00 on a Sunday. One listing gives the Sunday opening as 08:30; we show the later time so the page never tells you the shop is open when it may not be.
- What time does Betfred close in Newmarket?
- 22:00, every day of the week including Sunday. Both sources we checked agree on that.
- Is the Newmarket Betfred open on a Sunday?
- Yes, 09:00 to 22:00 — thirteen hours, covering the morning racing, the afternoon football and the evening games.
- Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
- No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
- Is Betfred in Newmarket open on bank holidays?
- Yes. Good Friday, Easter Monday and the May and August bank holidays are all trading days, usually on normal or slightly shortened hours. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would take two hours off the High Street shop. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later.
- Which Betfred is nearest to Newmarket racecourse and station?
- 69–73 High Street is the only Betfred in the town. It is about half a mile from Newmarket railway station and about a mile and a half from the Rowley Mile racecourse on the edge of town; the July Course is a similar distance to the south-west. The shop is on the High Street near the National Horseracing Museum.
- How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Newmarket?
- Tap “Use my current location”. The list re-orders from your position and the directions button routes you to the High Street shop. The nearest Betfred branches outside the town are in Mildenhall, Haverhill and Cambridge, each between nine and fourteen miles away.
