Newport is a compact and unusually consistent Betfred estate, and full published weekly times are available for every branch — so every countdown on this page is based on the shop’s own hours rather than a brand average. Six of the seven open at 08:30 on weekdays and keep the same time on a Saturday; 29 High Street opens half an hour earlier still and is the only Newport branch trading until 22:00 on a Sunday. The split is in the evenings: four shops run to 22:00, three stop at 20:30. Live status for every shop is in the lists below.

Every Betfred in this list carries its own published weekly times. Two are in the city centre itself, on High Street and in the Kingsway Centre end of Commercial Street; the other four sit on the main roads out — Cardiff Road to the south-west, Corporation Road through Pill, and Chepstow Road and Caerleon Road across the river in the east. Distances are straight-line estimates from the city centre. Street View opens at the shop’s postcode, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.
Newport Betfred opening times compared
The full weekly pattern for every central branch in one table. Today’s column is highlighted.
Newport has the most uniform weekday pattern of any city on this site: five of the six central branches keep identical hours Monday to Saturday, and five of the six open at exactly 08:30. The differences are all in the evening and on a Sunday. Corporation Road is the only branch that shortens its Saturday, closing at 21:00 instead of 22:00, and it drops again to 20:30 on a Sunday. Commercial Street and Caerleon Road run the same 20:30 finish all week.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Newport
Full weekly times are published for all seven Newport branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.
Open earliest
29 High Street is the earliest Betfred in Newport, opening at 08:00 Monday to Saturday. Every other branch opens at 08:30 on a weekday and again at 08:30 on a Saturday, which makes Newport one of the few places where almost the whole estate opens at the same time. On a Sunday, six of the seven open at 09:00; only Spytty Retail Park waits until 10:00.
Open latest
Four branches trade until 22:00 on weekdays: High Street, Cardiff Road, Corporation Road and Maindee on Chepstow Road. The other three — Commercial Street in the Kingsway Centre, Caerleon Road and Spytty — close at 20:30. No Newport Betfred closes earlier than that on a weekday, so the spread across the city is just 90 minutes.
The longest day in the city: 29 High Street runs 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00 to 22:00 on a Sunday — fourteen hours a day, six days a week, and the only 22:00 Sunday finish in Newport.
Betfred Newport Sunday opening times
Six of the seven Newport branches open at 09:00 on a Sunday. The closing times are what separate them, running from 20:30 to 22:00 in the city and as early as 16:00 out at Spytty.

| Caerleon Road181 Caerleon Road, NP19 7HA | 09:00 | 20:30 |
For a Sunday evening bet, High Street is the safest choice at 22:00, with Cardiff Road and Maindee open until 21:00. Three central branches finish at 20:30. The one to plan around is Spytty Retail Park, which closes at 16:00 on a Sunday — six hours earlier than the High Street shop and by some way the shortest Sunday of any Betfred in the city.
Betfred Newport bank holiday opening times
Wales keeps the same bank holidays as England, and betting shops can trade on every one of them bar Christmas Day. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on 25 December, so all seven Newport branches close that day by law rather than by choice.
St David’s Day on 1 March is a national day rather than a bank holiday, so Newport shops keep their normal times. On the actual bank holidays, branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Dates in the tables below update automatically.
Easter opening times
Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Wales. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Newport branch to follow its usual pattern for that day.
| Day | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal weekday times |
| Easter Saturday | Saturday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal Saturday times |
| Easter Sunday | First Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March | — | Normal Sunday times |
| Easter Monday | Day after Easter Sunday | — | Weekday or shortened hours |
May and August bank holidays
The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday in Wales, as in England. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide early close on some bank holiday Mondays, so check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before.
| Bank holiday | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May bank holiday | First Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible early close |
| Spring bank holiday | Last Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible early close |
| Summer bank holiday | Last Monday in August | — | Weekday opening, possible early close |
Christmas and New Year opening times
The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Newport times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter, with Chepstow’s Welsh Grand National meeting usually run the day after — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.
| Day | Date | Next date | Usual pattern in Newport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | 24 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | — | Closed all day, every shop |
| Boxing Day | 26 December | — | Normal opening, close around 20:00 |
| Substitute bank holiday | When 25 or 26 December falls on a weekend | — | Normal times for that day |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January | — | Later start around 10:00, close around 20:00 |
Each Newport branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The Kingsway Centre and Spytty Retail Park shops may also follow their centre’s own festive hours. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.
How the live opening times work
Everything live on this page reads the clock in Newport (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.
The panel at the top
The top panel covers the six Betfred branches within about a mile of the city centre. It tells you how many are open right now, which is next to close, and how long until the last one shuts for the night. After the last close it switches to counting down to the first shop opening the next morning.
The shop rows
Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.
Map, directions and Street View
Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all seven Newport branches.
Betfred at Spytty Retail Park
The seventh Newport branch sits out at Spytty, just over two miles east of the centre, beside Newport Stadium and the retail park. It publishes full weekly times like the rest, but its pattern is the odd one out in the city.
-
Betfred, Spytty Retail ParkUnit G2, Spytty Road, Spytty, Newport NP19 4TX
Spytty matches the city shops Monday to Saturday, on 08:30 to 20:30, but its Sunday is far shorter: 10:00 to 16:00, the only Betfred in Newport that opens later than 09:00 or closes before 20:30 on a Sunday. It is the closest branch to Newport Stadium, Newport International Sports Village and the Celtic Manor Resort, so it is worth checking the time before a Sunday trip out there.
Betfred near Newport
Newport sits in the middle of a dense ring of Gwent and Valleys towns, each with its own Betfred branches listed under its own post town rather than under Newport.
The closest are Cwmbran and Caerphilly to the north and Cardiff to the west, with further branches at Risca, Newbridge, Pontypool, Blackwood, Bargoed, Tredegar, Merthyr Tydfil, Caldicot and Chepstow. Directory listings for “Betfred Newport” sometimes mix in the branch at 70–72 Upper Bar in Newport, Shropshire, roughly 130 miles away and licensed by Telford and Wrekin Council; it is not part of the Newport, South Wales estate and is not counted on this page.
If you are heading for one of those towns rather than Newport itself, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the seven Newport branches, which may not be the nearest Betfred overall once you are outside the city.

Weekday times in every row are published for that branch. These bookmakers do not publish weekend times for their Newport shops, so the rows show weekday times only and are marked weekday listed. The Ladbrokes on Cambrian Road, by the Cambrian Centre and the station, opens at 08:00 and is the only non-Betfred shop in the city that opens as early as the High Street Betfred.
Maindee is the most competitive corner of the city: the Betfred at 123–127 Chepstow Road, a William Hill at number 113 and a Ladbrokes at 426 all sit on the same road. Newport has no Paddy Power, Coral beyond the single Cardiff Road shop, or independent chain listed. Every bookmaker on this page is closed on Christmas Day by law.

| Branches in Newport | 7 betting shops |
| Premises type | Betting shop |
Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington. Newport is one of its stronger Welsh towns: seven shops here against eleven in Cardiff and five in Swansea. Unlike the bigger cities, there is no real suburban spread — five of the seven are within a mile of the Westgate, and the estate essentially follows the two sides of the Usk, with High Street and Commercial Street in the centre, Cardiff Road and Corporation Road to the south and west, and Chepstow Road, Caerleon Road and Spytty across the river to the east.
For travellers, 29 High Street is a couple of minutes from Newport station, and 66 Commercial Street is closest to the bus station and Friars Walk. On matchdays at Rodney Parade, home to both the Dragons and Newport County, the nearest branch is 180–182 Corporation Road, about a quarter of a mile away, with the Maindee shop on Chepstow Road a little further. The Spytty branch is the one for Newport Stadium and the velodrome, and the closest to the Celtic Manor Resort at Coldra.
Frequently asked questions
- How many Betfred shops are there in Newport?
- Seven Betfred betting shops carry a Newport, South Wales address, all licensed by Newport City Council. Six are within about a mile of the city centre — High Street, Commercial Street, Cardiff Road, Corporation Road, Maindee and Caerleon Road — and the seventh is at Spytty Retail Park, a little over two miles east. A separate Betfred in Newport, Shropshire sometimes appears in the same directory listings; it is not included here.
- What time does Betfred open in Newport?
- Six of the seven open at 08:30 on weekdays and keep the same time on a Saturday. 29 High Street is the earliest, opening at 08:00 every day from Monday to Saturday. On a Sunday, six of the seven open at 09:00; Spytty Retail Park is the exception at 10:00.
- What time does Betfred close in Newport?
- Four branches close at 22:00 on weekdays: High Street, Cardiff Road, Corporation Road and Maindee. The other three — Commercial Street, Caerleon Road and Spytty — close at 20:30.
- Which Betfred in Newport is open latest on a Sunday?
- 29 High Street, which trades 09:00 to 22:00 on a Sunday, the same as the rest of its week. Cardiff Road and Maindee close at 21:00. Spytty Retail Park has much the shortest Sunday in the city, 10:00 to 16:00.
- Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
- No. Every betting shop in Wales, England and Scotland is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
- Are Betfred shops in Newport open on bank holidays?
- Yes. Wales keeps the same bank holidays as England, so Good Friday, Easter Monday and the May and August bank holidays are all trading days, usually on normal or slightly shortened hours. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later. St David’s Day on 1 March is not a bank holiday, so shops trade as usual.
- Which Betfred is nearest to Newport station and Rodney Parade?
- 29 High Street is a couple of minutes’ walk from Newport station, and 66 Commercial Street is the closest to the bus station and Friars Walk. For Rodney Parade, home of the Dragons and Newport County, the nearest is 180–182 Corporation Road, about a quarter of a mile away.
- How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Newport?
- Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of all seven Newport Betfred shops.
