Pontefract has two Betfred shops, a minute apart in the town centre, and both keep the most regular hours on this site: the same closing time on all seven days. Market Place closes at 21:00 and Beastfair at 20:00, whether it is a Tuesday or a Sunday. Both open at 08:30, or 09:30 on a Sunday. Neither reaches 22:00; the William Hill on the Market Place and the Jennings on Cornmarket trade an hour later. Some directories list only one Pontefract Betfred, because they file the Market Place shop under Wakefield.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders the list nearest-first.

Market Place runs 08:30 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:30 to 21:00 on a Sunday. A William Hill is a few doors along at 6 Market Place, open until 22:00. Distances are straight-line estimates from the Market Place. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.

The two shops open at the same time and differ only in the evening, by exactly an hour: Market Place at 21:00, Beastfair at 20:00. Neither changes its closing time from one day to the next, and the only weekly variation is the later 09:30 opening on a Sunday.

Betfred Pontefract bank holiday opening times

Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so both Pontefract branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.

On the other bank holidays, Pontefract branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would take an hour off Market Place and leave Beastfair unchanged. Dates in the tables below update automatically.

Easter opening times

Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect both Pontefract branches to follow their usual pattern for that day.

Easter moves each year. Dates shown are the next Easter weekend.

May and August bank holidays

The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before; a 20:00 close would take an hour off Market Place.

All three fall on a Monday, so the dates shift each year.

Christmas and New Year opening times

The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Pontefract times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.

The Christmas Day closure is a licence condition under the Gambling Act 2005. Next dates update automatically.

Each Pontefract branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. Both sit in the town centre, so their festive hours tend to follow the shops around the Market Place and the Buttercross. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.

How the live opening times work

Everything live on this page reads the clock in Pontefract (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.

The panel at the top

The top panel covers the Market Place branch. It tells you whether it is open right now and how long until it closes. Beastfair, the earlier-closing of the two, has its own live row below.

The shop rows

Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.

Map, directions and Street View

Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and both lists re-order themselves, and the directions button points to whichever of the two branches is closer to you.

Betfred on Beastfair

The second branch sits at 17 Beastfair, a minute’s walk west of the Market Place. It publishes full weekly times, so its live status is as exact as Market Place’s.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders every list nearest-first.

Betfred near Pontefract

The Pontefract post town covers a string of former mining towns and villages, and the licensing register lists far more Betfreds there than current listings.

The register lists five further Betfred shops with Pontefract postal addresses: 16/18 Station Lane in Featherstone (WF7 5BB), a shop on Barnsley Road next to the Plough (WF9 2SE), 59 Mill Lane in South Kirkby (WF9 3EZ), 23 Market Street in Hemsworth (WF9 4JY) and 25 Wakefield Road in Kinsley (WF9 5EB). None appears in current branch listings, in either Pontefract or Wakefield, so we have not counted them; if one is trading, let us know. Wakefield, about eight miles west, and Castleford, three miles north, are the nearest larger towns.

Both Pontefract shops are licensed by Wakefield Council, which covers the whole of the Wakefield district. If you are heading for Castleford, Knottingley or Featherstone rather than Pontefract itself, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the closer of the two Pontefract branches.

Other bookmakers in Pontefract

Pontefract town centre has a bookmaker on almost every corner around the Market Place.

William Hill has three shops in Pontefract, including 6 Market Place. BOYLE Sports trades at 21 Woolmarket, Jennings on Cornmarket, and Coral and Ladbrokes have one shop each in the town.

We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Pontefract, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. The William Hill on the Market Place and the Jennings on Cornmarket are the late options, both open until 22:00. Every bookmaker in the town is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about 60 miles west. Pontefract has two confirmed branches, both on the Market Place side of the town centre, where the register once listed seven across the Pontefract post town.

For visitors, both shops are a short walk from Pontefract Castle, the Market Place and the town’s three railway stations, Monkhill, Tanshelf and Baghill. On a race day at Pontefract Park, about a mile north-west, the Market Place shop is the one open later, until 21:00.

Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later.

Are there Betfred shops in Featherstone, Hemsworth or South Kirkby?
The licensing register lists Betfred shops with Pontefract postal addresses in Featherstone, Hemsworth, South Kirkby, Kinsley and on Barnsley Road near South Elmsall, but none appears in current branch listings, so we cannot confirm they are trading. The two town-centre shops are the only Pontefract Betfreds we can confirm.
