Portsmouth is the rare city where Sunday is not the short day. Four of the seven branches trade until 22:00 on a Sunday, three of them open at 08:30, and Arundel Street actually stays open half an hour later on a Sunday than it does midweek. Two shops, Copnor and Drayton, run exactly the same 09:00 to 20:30 day all seven days of the week. Full published weekly times are available for every branch, so every countdown on this page is the shop’s own.
All 5 Betfred shops on Portsea Island
Every Betfred on the island itself, ordered by distance from the Guildhall. Each row shows today’s times, whether the shop is open now and how long until it closes, with buttons for the map pin, a route from where you are and Street View of the shopfront.

Every Betfred in this list carries its own published weekly times. Arundel Street sits by the Guildhall and the station, The Hard is down at the harbour beside the Historic Dockyard, and the other three follow the spine of the island north — Fratton Road, London Road at North End and Tangier Road in Copnor. Distances are straight-line estimates from the Guildhall. Street View opens at the shop’s postcode, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.
Portsmouth Betfred opening times compared
The full weekly pattern for all seven branches in one table, island shops first. Today’s column is highlighted.
Copnor and Drayton are the simplest Betfred shops on this site: 09:00 to 20:30, every day, no variation at all. Fratton Road and Cosham both open half an hour earlier on a Saturday, at 08:00. The oddity is Arundel Street, which runs 08:30 to 21:30 Monday to Saturday and then extends to 22:00 on a Sunday — the only branch in the city whose Sunday is longer than its weekday.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Portsmouth
Full weekly times are published for all seven branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.
Open earliest
81a London Road at North End is the earliest in the city, opening at 08:00 seven days a week bar Sunday, when it starts at 08:30. Four branches open at 08:30 on weekdays — Arundel Street, Fratton Road, The Hard and Cosham — and Copnor and Drayton at 09:00. On a Saturday, Fratton Road and Cosham join North End on 08:00.
Open latest
Three branches trade until 22:00 on weekdays: Fratton Road, North End and Cosham. Arundel Street closes at 21:30 and The Hard at 21:00, which is the one to watch if you are down at Gunwharf Quays on a weekday evening. Copnor and Drayton close at 20:30, the earliest in the city, but they are also the most predictable because that time never changes.
Open until 22:00 on a Sunday: Arundel Street, Fratton Road, North End and Cosham all keep a 22:00 Sunday finish, and Arundel Street and North End open at 08:30 to go with it. For a city this size, that is an unusually strong Sunday: four of seven shops trading more than thirteen hours.
Betfred Portsmouth Sunday opening times
Sunday in Portsmouth looks much like a weekday. Doors open at 08:30 or 09:00, and four of the seven branches stay open until 22:00.
| Shop | Opens | Closes | Find the shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arundel Street33 Arundel Street, PO1 1NB | 08:30 | 22:00 | |
| North End (London Road)81a London Road, PO2 0BH | 08:30 | 22:00 | |

| Drayton (Havant Road)198 Havant Road, PO6 2EH | 09:00 | 20:30 |
No Portsmouth Betfred opens later than 09:00 on a Sunday and none closes before 20:30, which makes it one of the easiest cities on this site for a Sunday bet. If you are on the island, Arundel Street, Fratton Road and North End all run to 22:00; north of the creek, Cosham does the same. Only The Hard, at 21:00, and the two 20:30 shops finish earlier.
Betfred Portsmouth bank holiday opening times
Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all seven Portsmouth branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.
On the other bank holidays, Portsmouth branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would cut two hours off the three 22:00 branches. Dates in the tables below update automatically.
Easter opening times
Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Portsmouth branch to follow its usual pattern for that day.
| Day | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal weekday times |
| Easter Saturday | Saturday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal Saturday times |
| Easter Sunday | First Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March | — | Normal Sunday times |
| Easter Monday | Day after Easter Sunday | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
May and August bank holidays
The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday, and all three are busy days on the seafront and at Gunwharf Quays. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before.
| Bank holiday | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May bank holiday | First Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Spring bank holiday | Last Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Summer bank holiday | Last Monday in August | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
Christmas and New Year opening times
The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Portsmouth times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.
| Day | Date | Next date | Usual pattern in Portsmouth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | 24 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | — | Closed all day, every shop |
| Boxing Day | 26 December | — | Normal opening, close around 20:00 |
| Substitute bank holiday | When 25 or 26 December falls on a weekend | — | Normal times for that day |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January | — | Later start around 10:00, close around 20:00 |
Each Portsmouth branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.
How the live opening times work
Everything live on this page reads the clock in Portsmouth (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.
The panel at the top
The top panel covers the five Betfred branches on Portsea Island. It tells you how many are open right now, which is next to close, and how long until the last one shuts for the night. After the last close it switches to counting down to the first shop opening the next morning.
The shop rows
Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.
Map, directions and Street View
Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all seven Portsmouth branches, Cosham and Drayton included.
Betfred in Cosham and Drayton
Two branches sit north of Portsbridge Creek, off the island, in the PO6 suburbs. Both are licensed by Portsmouth City Council and both publish full weekly times, so their live status is as exact as the island shops’.

Betfred, Cosham (High Street)50 High Street, Cosham, Portsmouth PO6 3AG
-
Betfred, Drayton (Havant Road)198 Havant Road, Drayton, Portsmouth PO6 2EH
They are opposites. Cosham High Street is one of the three strongest shops in the city, running 08:30 to 22:00 on weekdays, 08:00 to 22:00 on a Saturday and 08:30 to 22:00 on a Sunday, with a Ladbrokes a few doors along at number 42 that opens at 08:00. Drayton on Havant Road keeps the same steady 09:00 to 20:30 every day of the week, like its counterpart at Copnor. Cosham is also the closest Betfred to the M27 and to Portchester.
Betfred near Portsmouth
Portsmouth sits at the bottom of a dense corner of south Hampshire, and several nearby towns have their own post towns and their own Betfred listings.
The closest is Southsea, where the branch at 71 Palmerston Road is barely a mile and a half from the Guildhall but listed under its own post town, so it does not appear in the Portsmouth count. Beyond that there are branches at Havant, Waterlooville, Fareham and Gosport across the harbour, with Chichester to the east and Southampton, which has a far larger estate, about twenty miles west. On the Isle of Wight, Sandown is reachable by ferry from the Hard.
If you are staying in Southsea or heading for Gosport rather than Portsmouth proper, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the seven Portsmouth branches, which may not be the nearest Betfred overall once you are outside the city.

Weekday times in every row are published for that branch. These bookmakers do not publish weekend times for their Portsmouth shops, so the rows show weekday times only and are marked weekday listed. Ladbrokes covers the same ground as Betfred and then some: it has shops on Fratton Road, London Road and Cosham High Street within a few doors of a Betfred, plus Kingston Road, Copnor Road and Paulsgrove where Betfred has none.
Two spots are worth knowing. On Cosham High Street the Ladbrokes at 42 opens at 08:00, half an hour before the Betfred at 50. At North End, the Ladbrokes at 68 London Road, the Jennings on Laburnum Grove and the Betfred at 81a are all within about a hundred yards of each other, and the Jennings is the only shop in the city with a 22:00 close and a 09:00 start every weekday. Every bookmaker in the city is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington. Portsmouth is a compact, tightly packed city — most of it on Portsea Island — and the Betfred map reflects that: five shops strung along the island from the harbour to Copnor, and two more north of Portsbridge Creek at Cosham and Drayton. There is no real suburban sprawl to cover, so the shops sit on the old high streets instead: Arundel Street by the Guildhall, The Hard at the dockyard gates, Fratton Road, London Road at North End and Tangier Road in Copnor.
For visitors, 27 The Hard is the one to know. It is a couple of minutes from Portsmouth Harbour station, the Historic Dockyard, HMS Victory and the Gunwharf Quays outlet centre, and the Isle of Wight and Gosport ferries leave from the same spot. 33 Arundel Street is closest to Portsmouth & Southsea station and the Cascades centre. On matchdays at Fratton Park, 108/110 Fratton Road is the nearest branch, about half a mile from the ground on the walk up from Fratton station, and it is one of the three shops open until 22:00.
Frequently asked questions
- How many Betfred shops are there in Portsmouth?
- Seven, all licensed by Portsmouth City Council. Five are on Portsea Island — Arundel Street, Fratton Road, The Hard, North End and Copnor — and two are north of the creek in the PO6 suburbs, at Cosham and Drayton. A further branch on Palmerston Road is listed under Southsea, which has its own post town.
- What time does Betfred open in Portsmouth?
- North End is the earliest at 08:00 on weekdays. Four branches open at 08:30 and the other two, Copnor and Drayton, at 09:00. Sunday opening is unusually early for a Betfred estate: three branches open at 08:30 and the rest at 09:00, so no Portsmouth shop makes you wait until 10:00.
- What time does Betfred close in Portsmouth?
- Three branches close at 22:00 on weekdays: Fratton Road, North End and Cosham. Arundel Street closes at 21:30 and The Hard at 21:00. Copnor and Drayton are the early pair at 20:30, and they keep those same hours all seven days.
- Which Betfred in Portsmouth is open latest on a Sunday?
- Four of the seven trade until 22:00 on a Sunday: Arundel Street, Fratton Road, North End and Cosham. Arundel Street is the pick of them, because it actually stays open half an hour later on a Sunday (22:00) than on a weekday (21:30). Copnor and Drayton close at 20:30.
- Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
- No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
- Are Betfred shops in Portsmouth open on bank holidays?
- Yes. Good Friday, Easter Monday and the May and August bank holidays are all trading days, usually on normal or slightly shortened hours. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally close early, and New Year’s Day opens later.
- Which Betfred is nearest to Fratton Park and the Historic Dockyard?
- 108/110 Fratton Road is the closest to Fratton Park, home of Portsmouth FC, about half a mile from the ground and on the walk up from Fratton station. For the Historic Dockyard, HMS Victory and Gunwharf Quays, 27 The Hard is right on the doorstep, a couple of minutes from Portsmouth Harbour station.
- How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Portsmouth?
- Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of all seven Portsmouth Betfred shops.
