Reading’s Betfred shops are unusually consistent: seven of the eight close at the same time on a Sunday as they do on a weekday, so there is almost no Sunday timetable to learn. The exception sits in the town centre. 107 Friar Street shuts at 18:00 on a Sunday, while 158 Friar Street, further along the same street, stays open until 22:00. Three shops trade until 22:00 during the week — both on Friar Street and the Battle Hospital site on Oxford Road. Full published weekly times are available for all eight.

158 Friar Street runs 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday and 09:00 to 22:00 on a Sunday. 107 Friar Street opens an hour later, at 09:00, closes at 22:00 during the week and keeps short Sunday hours, 10:00 to 18:00. A Coral at 11 Friar Street and a William Hill at 134–135 are on the same street, with a Paddy Power and a Ladbrokes on Queen Victoria Street; the Ladbrokes closes at 20:30. Distances are straight-line estimates from Broad Street. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.
Reading Betfred opening times compared
The full weekly pattern for all eight branches in one table, nearest the town centre first. Today’s column is highlighted.
Read across any row and the closing time barely moves. Oxford Road and 158 Friar Street hold 22:00 all week; Tilehurst and the Northumberland Avenue shops hold 21:00; Coronation Square and Caversham hold 20:30. Tilehurst is the most regular shop on the page, 09:00 to 21:00 on every day of the week. 107 Friar Street is the only one whose Sunday is different.

Betfred Reading bank holiday opening times
Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all eight Reading branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.
On the other bank holidays, Reading branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would take up to two hours off the Reading branches. Dates in the tables below update automatically.
Easter opening times
Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Reading branch to follow its usual pattern for that day.
| Day | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal weekday times |
| Easter Saturday | Saturday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal Saturday times |
| Easter Sunday | First Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March | — | Normal Sunday times |
| Easter Monday | Day after Easter Sunday | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
May and August bank holidays
The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before; a 20:00 bank holiday close would take up to two hours off the Reading branches.
| Bank holiday | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May bank holiday | First Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Spring bank holiday | Last Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Summer bank holiday | Last Monday in August | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
Christmas and New Year opening times
The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Reading times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.
| Day | Date | Next date | Usual pattern in Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | 24 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | — | Closed all day, every shop |
| Boxing Day | 26 December | — | Normal opening, close around 20:00 |
| Substitute bank holiday | When 25 or 26 December falls on a weekend | — | Normal times for that day |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January | — | Later start around 10:00, close around 20:00 |
Each Reading branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.
How the live opening times work
Everything live on this page reads the clock in Reading (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.
The panel at the top
The top panel covers the two Friar Street branches. It tells you how many are open right now and how long until the last one shuts — 22:00, every day, at number 158.
The shop rows
Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.
Map, directions and Street View
Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all eight Reading branches.
Betfred across the rest of Reading
Six more branches serve the rest of Reading: the Battle Hospital site on Oxford Road, Coronation Square in Southcote and Meadway Precinct in Tilehurst to the west, two shops on Northumberland Avenue in Whitley to the south, and Henley Road in Caversham, north of the Thames.

Oxford Road is the late shop outside the centre, open until 22:00 every day, with Corals at 310 and 737 Oxford Road nearby. The two Northumberland Avenue shops are about a mile apart; number 542 is the nearest Betfred to Reading FC’s ground. Caversham’s Henley Road shop closes at 20:30 every day, while the Coral on Church Street, Caversham, trades until 22:00.
Betfred near Reading
Reading sits where the Kennet meets the Thames, and the licensing register lists two addresses that current listings do not.
The register lists 143 The Meadway (RG30 4AP) in Tilehurst, a few doors from the listed 7 Meadway Precinct shop and possibly an earlier address for it, and 20 Prospect Street in Caversham (RG4 8JG). Neither appears in current listings, so we have not counted them. Beyond Reading, the nearest Betfred towns are Maidenhead, about thirteen miles east, and Basingstoke, about fifteen miles south; Slough, about eighteen miles east, has Betfreds of its own.
All eight branches are licensed by Reading Borough Council. If you are heading for Woodley, Earley or Wokingham rather than Reading itself, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the eight Reading branches.
Other bookmakers in Reading
Reading is a Coral town, with twelve shops to Betfred’s eight.
Coral has twelve shops in Reading, including Friar Street, Station Road, Oxford Road, Whitley Street and Church Street in Caversham. Ladbrokes has three, among them Queen Victoria Street, Basingstoke Road and Shinfield Road; William Hill two, including Friar Street; and Paddy Power two, on Queen Victoria Street and Oxford Road.
We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Reading, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Most of the Corals near a Betfred trade until 22:00, which matters in Caversham and Southcote, where the Betfred shuts at 20:30. Every bookmaker in the town is closed on Christmas Day by law.

For visitors, 158 Friar Street is the one to know: a few minutes from Reading station and the Oracle, and open until 22:00 every day of the week. For a Reading FC match, 542 Northumberland Avenue in Whitley is the nearest Betfred.
