Betfred St Helens bank holiday opening times

Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all six St Helens branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.

On the other bank holidays, St Helens branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would take up to an hour off the St Helens branches and make no difference at Thatto Heath, which already closes at 20:00. Dates in the tables below update automatically.

Easter opening times

Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each St Helens branch to follow its usual pattern for that day.

Easter moves each year. Dates shown are the next Easter weekend.

May and August bank holidays

The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before; a 20:00 bank holiday close would take up to an hour off the St Helens branches.

All three fall on a Monday, so the dates shift each year.

Christmas and New Year opening times

The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when St Helens times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.

The Christmas Day closure is a licence condition under the Gambling Act 2005. Next dates update automatically.

Each St Helens branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.

How the live opening times work

Everything live on this page reads the clock in St Helens (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.

The panel at the top

The top panel covers the Ormskirk Street branch in the town centre. It tells you whether it is open right now and how long until it closes. The other five have their own live rows in the sections below.

The shop rows

Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.

Map, directions and Street View

Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all six St Helens branches.

Betfred across the rest of St Helens

Five more branches serve the rest of St Helens: Fingerpost and Cambridge Road, each about two-thirds of a mile from the centre, and Thatto Heath, Sutton and Clock Face further out.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders every list nearest-first.

Betfred near St Helens

The licensing register lists eight Betfred premises in St Helens; this page has six.

The register lists two Betfreds on Higher Parr Street: 107 Higher Parr Street, which is on this page, and Unit 6, Fingerpost Shopping Centre, 90 Higher Parr Street. Current listings give the two identical opening hours and place them within about a hundred yards of each other, so they may be the same shop; we have given a live row only to 107. The register also lists two Betfreds in Haydock, at 229 West End Road and 84 Church Road, which do not appear in current St Helens listings. The Thatto Heath shop on Nutgrove Road is in current listings but not in the register.

All six branches are licensed by St Helens Council. If you are heading for Prescot, Rainhill or Newton-le-Willows rather than St Helens itself, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the six.

Other bookmakers in St Helens

Ladbrokes has the most betting shops in St Helens.

Ladbrokes has four shops in St Helens, including Church Street and Baldwin Street in the centre, Elephant Lane in Thatto Heath and Knowsley Road. Coral has three, among them Bridge Street, Higher Parr Street at Fingerpost and Derbyshire Hill Road, and William Hill two, on Bridge Street and Ormskirk Street. Several of them are listed as open until 22:00, later than any St Helens Betfred.

We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in St Helens, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Every bookmaker in the town is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about nine miles east of St Helens. St Helens has six branches, all of them closing earlier than Betfreds in most towns.

For visitors, 11–13 Ormskirk Street is the one to know: in the town centre, near St Helens Central station, and the last St Helens Betfred to close on every day except Saturday.
