Sunderland’s two city-centre Betfreds look identical for six days of the week, both open 08:00 to 22:00, but they part company on a Sunday: Blandford Street stays open until 22:00, while Fawcett Street closes at 18:00. Pallion is also open until 22:00 Monday to Saturday. Grindon and Southwick keep shorter neighbourhood hours, and Grindon is one of the few Betfreds that closes later on a Saturday than on a weekday.

Both run 08:00 to 22:00 Monday to Saturday. On a Sunday Blandford Street runs 09:00 to 22:00 and Fawcett Street 09:00 to 18:00, so after 18:00 on a Sunday Blandford Street is the only city-centre Betfred open. The Bridges has a Ladbrokes, and there is a Coral on Athenaeum Street and a Paddy Power on Derwent Street close by. Distances are straight-line estimates from the station. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.

Betfred Sunderland bank holiday opening times
Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all five Sunderland branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.
On the other bank holidays, Sunderland branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred has in past years announced a chain-wide 20:00 close on bank holiday Mondays, which would take two hours off Fawcett Street, Blandford Street and Pallion, an hour off Grindon and half an hour off Southwick. Dates in the tables below update automatically.
Easter opening times
Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Sunderland branch to follow its usual pattern for that day.
| Day | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal weekday times |
| Easter Saturday | Saturday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal Saturday times |
| Easter Sunday | First Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March | — | Normal Sunday times |
| Easter Monday | Day after Easter Sunday | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
May and August bank holidays
The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before; a 20:00 bank holiday close would take up to two hours off the Sunderland branches.
| Bank holiday | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May bank holiday | First Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Spring bank holiday | Last Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Summer bank holiday | Last Monday in August | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
Christmas and New Year opening times
The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Sunderland times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.
| Day | Date | Next date | Usual pattern in Sunderland |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | 24 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | — | Closed all day, every shop |
| Boxing Day | 26 December | — | Normal opening, close around 20:00 |
| Substitute bank holiday | When 25 or 26 December falls on a weekend | — | Normal times for that day |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January | — | Later start around 10:00, close around 20:00 |
Each Sunderland branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.
How the live opening times work
Everything live on this page reads the clock in Sunderland (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.
The panel at the top
The top panel covers the two city-centre branches, on Fawcett Street and Blandford Street. It tells you how many are open right now and how long until they close. The other three have their own live rows in the sections below.
The shop rows
Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.
Map, directions and Street View
Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all five Sunderland branches.
Betfred across the rest of Sunderland
Three more branches serve the rest of Sunderland: Pallion and Grindon to the west, and Southwick north of the river.

Betfred near Sunderland
The licensing register and current listings agree on Sunderland’s five Betfreds.
The register lists 57 Fawcett Street twice, with a small difference in punctuation; it is one shop. The nearest Betfreds outside the city are in Houghton-le-Spring, Seaham, South Shields and Washington, each a few miles away.
All five branches are licensed by Sunderland City Council. If you are heading for Roker, Hendon or Doxford Park rather than the city centre, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the five.
Other bookmakers in Sunderland
William Hill has the most betting shops in Sunderland.
William Hill has nine shops in Sunderland, including Athenaeum Street in the centre, St Luke’s Terrace in Pallion and The Broadway in Grindon. Coral has seven, among them Athenaeum Street, The Green in Southwick and Roker Avenue; Ladbrokes has one, in The Bridges, and Paddy Power one, on Derwent Street.
We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Sunderland, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Every bookmaker in the town is closed on Christmas Day by law.
