Wigan’s seven Betfreds fall into two tiers. Wallgate, Hindley and the Gerard Centre open at 08:30 and close at 21:30 or 22:00; Scholes Precinct, Pemberton, Platt Bridge and Bryn Road open at 09:00 and close at 20:30. The four later-opening shops keep identical weeks from Monday to Saturday, so on those days the only thing separating them is distance. Sunday breaks the pattern: six different rows across the seven shops, closing at 18:00, 19:00 or 20:00.

The town-centre branch at 6–10 Wallgate, a couple of minutes from both stations.
-
Betfred, Wallgate6–10 Wallgate, Wigan WN1 1JU
Wallgate runs 08:30 to 21:30 Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 22:00 on a Saturday and 09:00 to 20:00 on a Sunday. Wallgate is thick with bookmakers: a Coral at 42–44 shares the Betfred’s postcode and its hours, a BOYLE Sports stands at number 1 and a Jennings on Hallgate runs to 22:00. Distances are straight-line estimates from Wallgate. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in Wigan
Full weekly times are published for all seven branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.

Wallgate, Hindley and the Gerard Centre open at 08:30 on weekdays and 08:00 on a Saturday, the earliest in the borough. The other four open at 09:00 on weekdays and 08:30 on a Saturday. On a Sunday Pemberton and Wallgate open first, at 09:00.

Betfred Wigan bank holiday opening times
Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all seven Wigan branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.
On the other bank holidays, Wigan branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred’s own shop notices have stated that all its shops close at 20:00 on bank holiday Mondays, which would take two hours off Hindley, ninety minutes off Wallgate and the Gerard Centre, and half an hour off the other four. Dates in the tables below update automatically.
Easter opening times
Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each Wigan branch to follow its usual pattern for that day.
| Day | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Good Friday | Friday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal weekday times |
| Easter Saturday | Saturday before Easter Sunday | — | Normal Saturday times |
| Easter Sunday | First Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March | — | Normal Sunday times |
| Easter Monday | Day after Easter Sunday | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
May and August bank holidays
The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before; a 20:00 bank holiday close would take up to an hour off the Wigan branches.
| Bank holiday | Falls on | Next date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May bank holiday | First Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Spring bank holiday | Last Monday in May | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
| Summer bank holiday | Last Monday in August | — | Weekday opening, possible 20:00 close |
Christmas and New Year opening times
The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when Wigan times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.
| Day | Date | Next date | Usual pattern in Wigan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | 24 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| Christmas Day | 25 December | — | Closed all day, every shop |
| Boxing Day | 26 December | — | Normal opening, close around 20:00 |
| Substitute bank holiday | When 25 or 26 December falls on a weekend | — | Normal times for that day |
| New Year’s Eve | 31 December | — | Normal opening, early close around 18:00 |
| New Year’s Day | 1 January | — | Later start around 10:00, close around 20:00 |
Each Wigan branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.
How the live opening times work
Everything live on this page reads the clock in Wigan (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.
The panel at the top
The top panel covers the Wallgate branch in the town centre. It tells you whether it is open right now and how long until it closes. The other six have their own live rows in the sections below.
The shop rows
Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.
Map, directions and Street View
Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all seven Wigan branches.
Betfred across the rest of Wigan
Six more branches serve the rest of the borough: Scholes just east of the centre, Pemberton and Platt Bridge a mile and a half to two miles out, Hindley to the east, and two in Ashton-in-Makerfield.

Their Sundays differ, from Pemberton’s 09:00 start to Platt Bridge’s 20:00 close. Hindley and the Gerard Centre belong with Wallgate instead, opening at 08:30 and trading to 22:00 on a Saturday.
Betfred near Wigan
The register and current listings disagree about three shops each way.
The register we hold lists 236 Scholes, Chapel Lane and 9 Preston Road in Standish; none appears in current listings. Two of those are less than a mile from the town centre, and neither showed up alongside any of the seven listed shops, so we have not given them live rows. Going the other way, current listings include 6–10 Wallgate and 1a Bryn Road, which our register copy does not, and they differ on detail elsewhere: Walthew Parade against Walthew Lane, 399–401 against 397–399 Ormskirk Road, and “3 Retail Development, Gerrard Street” against “3 The Gerard Centre” at the same postcode.
All seven branches are licensed by Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council, which also licenses Betfred shops in Leigh, in Tyldesley and Atherton under the Manchester post town, and in Golborne under Warrington. Those carry their own post towns and are not on this page. If you are heading for Standish, Orrell or Ince rather than the town centre, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the seven.
Other bookmakers in Wigan
Ladbrokes has the most betting shops in Wigan.
Coral has five shops in Wigan, William Hill four, Ladbrokes two, and BOYLE Sports and Jennings one each: thirteen against Betfred’s seven, in a town with twenty betting shops in total. The Jennings on Hallgate and the William Hills on Mesnes Street and at the Gerard Centre all run to 22:00; the Ladbrokes on Woodhouse Drive closes at 19:00.
We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in Wigan, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Every bookmaker in the town is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about fifteen miles south. Wigan has seven branches, the most of any town in this batch apart from Warrington itself.
For visitors, 6–10 Wallgate is the one to know: between Wigan North Western and Wigan Wallgate stations, a few minutes from the Grand Arcade, and open until 21:30 on weekdays and 22:00 on a Saturday.
Frequently asked questions
- How many Betfred shops are there in Wigan?
- Seven in current listings, all licensed by Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council: 6–10 Wallgate in the town centre, Scholes Precinct, Ormskirk Road in Pemberton, Walthew Lane in Platt Bridge, Market Street in Hindley, and two in Ashton-in-Makerfield on Bryn Road and at the Gerard Centre. The licensing register also lists 236 Scholes, Chapel Lane and Preston Road in Standish, which do not appear in current listings.
- What time does Betfred close in Wigan?
- 83 Market Street in Hindley is the only one open to 22:00 on a weekday. Wallgate and the Gerard Centre close at 21:30, and the other four at 20:30. On a Saturday those three all run to 22:00; on a Sunday nothing is open past 20:00.
- What time does Betfred open in Wigan?
- Wallgate, Hindley and the Gerard Centre open at 08:30 Monday to Friday and 08:00 on a Saturday. Scholes Precinct, Pemberton, Platt Bridge and Bryn Road open at 09:00 on weekdays and 08:30 on a Saturday.
- Which Betfred in Wigan is open latest?
- Hindley on a weekday, at 22:00. On a Saturday Hindley, Wallgate and the Gerard Centre all close at 22:00. On a Sunday the latest are Wallgate, Platt Bridge and the Gerard Centre at 20:00.
- Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
- No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
- Do any Wigan Betfreds keep the same hours?
- Yes. Scholes Precinct and Bryn Road keep identical weeks, and Pemberton and Platt Bridge match them Monday to Saturday, differing only on a Sunday. All four run 09:00 to 20:30 on weekdays and 08:30 to 20:00 on a Saturday.
- Which Betfred is nearest Wigan North Western and Wallgate stations?
- 6–10 Wallgate, a couple of minutes from both stations. It is open until 21:30 on weekdays and 22:00 on a Saturday, so it covers a late train home. A Coral at 42–44 Wallgate shares its postcode and keeps the same hours.
- Are the Leigh, Tyldesley and Golborne shops on this page?
- No. Wigan Council licenses Betfred shops in Leigh, in Tyldesley and Atherton under the Manchester post town, and in Golborne under Warrington, but each carries its own post town, so they are not part of the Wigan listing.
- Why do the register and current listings disagree on Wigan?
- The register lists 236 Scholes, Chapel Lane and 9 Preston Road in Standish, none of which appear in current listings; current listings include 6–10 Wallgate and 1a Bryn Road, which the register copy we hold does not. Two of the three register-only addresses are well under a mile from the town centre and did not appear alongside any of the seven listed shops, so we have given live rows only to the seven that publish times.
- How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in Wigan?
- Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of the seven Wigan shops.
