York’s four Betfreds each keep a different week, and the two inside the city walls are the furthest apart of the lot. 20 Pavement runs to 22:00 Monday to Saturday; 103 Walmgate, a third of a mile away, closes at 20:30 on a weekday and 19:00 on a Sunday. Acomb matches Pavement’s 22:00 on weekdays and opens earliest of all at 08:00, while Millfield Avenue sits in between at 21:00.

Pavement runs 08:30 to 22:00 Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 22:00 on a Saturday and 09:00 to 21:30 on a Sunday, the latest closing time in the city on both weekend days. A Ladbrokes on Piccadilly and a William Hill on Swinegate keep exactly the same weekday hours, 08:30 to 22:00, so three brands open and close together inside the walls from Monday to Friday. Distances are straight-line estimates from Pavement. Street View opens at the shop’s position, so you may need to turn the view to face the shopfront.

Every row in this table is different, which is rare on this site. The weekday closing column alone runs 22:00, 22:00, 21:00 and 20:30, and the Sunday column spreads from 21:30 down to 19:00.

Earliest and latest Betfred shops in York

Full weekly times are published for all four branches, so this section covers every shop on the page.

Open earliest

Acomb opens at 08:00 on weekdays, the earliest of the four, and Pavement at 08:30; Walmgate and Millfield Avenue at 09:00. On a Saturday Pavement and Acomb both open at 08:00 and the other two at 08:30. On a Sunday Pavement and Acomb open at 09:00, Walmgate and Millfield Avenue at 10:00.

Open latest

Pavement and Acomb close at 22:00 on weekdays, Millfield Avenue at 21:00 and Walmgate at 20:30. On a Saturday Pavement holds 22:00, Acomb drops to 21:30, Millfield Avenue to 20:30 and Walmgate to 20:00.

An early start in Acomb: the William Hill in Acomb Court shares the Betfred’s YO24 3BJ postcode and opens at 07:15, the earliest opening time recorded anywhere on this site, forty-five minutes before the Betfred. It closes an hour earlier, at 21:00, and the other Acomb shops — a Ladbrokes on Front Street and a Coral on Beckfield Lane — both shut at 19:00, so after seven the Betfred has Acomb to itself for three hours.

Sunday spreads the four right out: Pavement closes at 21:30, Acomb at 21:00, Millfield Avenue at 20:00 and Walmgate at 19:00. Pavement and Acomb open at 09:00, the other two at 10:00, so Pavement’s Sunday is four and a half hours longer than Walmgate’s.

Betfred York bank holiday opening times

Betting shops in England can trade on every bank holiday bar one. Premises licences issued under the Gambling Act 2005 carry a condition that gambling facilities cannot be provided on Christmas Day, so all four York branches close on 25 December by law rather than by choice.

On the other bank holidays, York branches usually run either their normal times for that day of the week or a slightly shorter day. Betfred’s own shop notices have stated that all its shops close at 20:00 on bank holiday Mondays, which would take two hours off Pavement and Acomb, an hour off Millfield Avenue and half an hour off Walmgate. Dates in the tables below update automatically.

Easter opening times

Betting shops have been allowed to open on Good Friday since the Gambling Act 2005 came into force, and there is no Easter Sunday restriction in Great Britain. Across the Easter weekend, expect each York branch to follow its usual pattern for that day.

Easter moves each year. Dates shown are the next Easter weekend.

May and August bank holidays

The early May, spring and summer bank holidays all fall on a Monday. Check the window card or the Betfred shop finder the week before; a 20:00 bank holiday close would take up to an hour off the York branches.

All three fall on a Monday, so the dates shift each year.

Christmas and New Year opening times

The festive fortnight is the only stretch of the year when York times move far from the weekly pattern. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve normally finish early, Boxing Day — the biggest racing day of the winter — runs close to normal, and New Year’s Day starts later.

The Christmas Day closure is a licence condition under the Gambling Act 2005. Next dates update automatically.

Each York branch sets its own festive times and usually posts them in the window from mid-December. The live countdowns on this page follow the standard weekly times and the Christmas Day closure only, so check the window card before travelling on 24, 26 or 31 December or 1 January.

How the live opening times work

Everything live on this page reads the clock in York (UK time), not the clock on your device, and compares it against each shop’s published times. That keeps the status right even if you are checking from abroad.

The panel at the top

The top panel covers the Pavement branch in the city centre. It tells you whether it is open right now and how long until it closes. The other three have their own live rows in the sections below, and Walmgate in particular closes much earlier despite being a few minutes away.

The shop rows

Open now means the shop is inside its published times and the countdown shows how long is left. Closed shows when it opens next. Counters stop taking cash bets a few minutes before closing so staff can settle slips, so if you are collecting winnings, aim to arrive ten minutes before the time shown.

Map, directions and Street View

Each row has three buttons. Map drops a pin on the shop, Directions plans a route from wherever you are, and Street View shows the street around the shop so you can spot the frontage before you set off. Tap “Use my current location” and the lists re-order themselves so the closest shop is always at the top, and the directions button points to the nearest of all four York branches.

Betfred across the rest of York

Three more branches: Walmgate a third of a mile east inside the walls, Millfield Avenue off Fulford Road, and Acomb about two miles west.

Directions work without this. Sharing your location re-orders every list nearest-first.

Walmgate is the earliest-closing Betfred in York on every day of the week and the only one that never reaches 21:00. Millfield Avenue, off Fulford Road towards the university, closes at 21:00 on weekdays and 20:00 on a Sunday. Acomb is the opposite end of the scale: 08:00 to 22:00 on weekdays, the longest day of the four.

Betfred near York

Two of the six shops that directory sites list under York are in Scarborough.

Directory sites count six Betfred shops in York by including 87/89 Falsgrave Road and 43 Westborough. Both are in Scarborough, roughly forty miles north-east on the coast, and the Gambling Commission lists them under Scarborough Borough Council rather than City of York; one of the directory’s own shop URLs even carries “scarborough” twice. They have their own post town, so this page covers the four genuinely in York. The licensing register and current listings agree on those four.

All four branches are licensed by City of York Council. Selby, Wetherby, Harrogate and Malton have their own betting shops under their own post towns. If you are heading for Acomb, Fulford or Heworth rather than the middle of the city, use the location button above: the directions button always routes to the nearest of the four.

Other bookmakers in York

Ladbrokes has the most betting shops in York.

Coral has four shops in York, Ladbrokes three and William Hill three: ten against Betfred’s four. Inside the walls the Ladbrokes on Piccadilly and the William Hill on Swinegate match Betfred’s 08:30 to 22:00 exactly, while the Ladbrokes on Market Street closes at 19:00. In Acomb the William Hill sharing the Betfred’s postcode opens at 07:15.

We are still confirming full weekly times branch by branch for the non-Betfred shops in York, so they are not listed with live status on this page yet. Every bookmaker in the city is closed on Christmas Day by law.

Betfred began in Salford in 1967, when brothers Fred and Peter Done opened their first betting shop, and it runs its estate from Birchwood in Warrington, about ninety miles south-west. York has four branches, no two of them keeping the same week.

For visitors, 20 Pavement is the one to know: in the middle of the city by the Shambles, about half a mile from both York station and the Minster, and open until 22:00 Monday to Saturday. Walmgate is closer to Fossgate and the Barbican but shuts at 20:30.

Frequently asked questions

How many Betfred shops are there in York?
Four, all licensed by City of York Council: 20 Pavement and 103 Walmgate inside the city walls, 1–3 Millfield Avenue off Fulford Road, and 7 Acomb Court on Front Street in Acomb. Directory sites list six by including two Scarborough shops, on Falsgrave Road and Westborough, about forty miles away.
What time does Betfred close in York?
Pavement and Acomb close at 22:00 on weekdays, Millfield Avenue at 21:00 and Walmgate at 20:30. On a Sunday it is 21:30 at Pavement, 21:00 at Acomb, 20:00 at Millfield Avenue and 19:00 at Walmgate.
What time does Betfred open in York?
Acomb opens at 08:00 every weekday, the earliest in the city; Pavement at 08:30; Walmgate and Millfield Avenue at 09:00. On a Sunday Pavement and Acomb open at 09:00, Walmgate and Millfield Avenue at 10:00.
Which Betfred in York is open latest?
Pavement and Acomb, both until 22:00 Monday to Friday. Pavement holds 22:00 on a Saturday too and closes at 21:30 on a Sunday, the latest in the city on both days.
Is Betfred open on Christmas Day?
No. Every betting shop in Great Britain is closed on Christmas Day. It is a condition attached to premises licences under the Gambling Act 2005, not a company decision.
Do any York Betfreds keep the same hours?
No. All four keep a different week, which is unusual for a city this size. The two inside the walls are the furthest apart: Pavement closes at 22:00 on a weekday and Walmgate, a third of a mile away, at 20:30.
Which Betfred is nearest York station and the Minster?
20 Pavement, about half a mile from both, in the middle of the city by the Shambles. It closes at 22:00 Monday to Saturday, so it covers a late train home.
Are the Scarborough shops on this page?
No. Directory sites file 87/89 Falsgrave Road and 43 Westborough under York, but both are in Scarborough, about forty miles north-east, and the Gambling Commission lists them under Scarborough Borough Council. They carry their own post town, so they are not part of York.
Which betting shop in York opens earliest?
Not a Betfred. The William Hill in Acomb Court shares the Betfred’s YO24 3BJ postcode and opens at 07:15, forty-five minutes before it, though it closes an hour earlier at 21:00. Premises licences generally permit trading from 07:00.
How do I find the nearest Betfred to me in York?
Tap “Use my current location”. Every list on this page then re-orders nearest-first, and the directions button at the top routes you to the closest of the four York shops.
